Description
The position of School Crossing Guard is a very responsible position requiring analytical ability, common sense, and intelligence. It involves assuring the safety of the school children of Martin County while getting them to and from the school crossing areas. It also involves directing the flow of traffic during the school crossing hours. This is a civilian part-time position.
About the role
The School Crossing Guard shall answer directly to the School Crossing Guard Supervisor. The Martin County Sheriff's Office is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Essential Functions
- Observes moving traffic, traffic control signals and pedestrian crossing signals visually at assigned locations.
- Determines when it is appropriate to have pedestrians cross and moves to the center of the crosswalks and intersections to halt traffic within the traffic signal walk cycle.
- Requires students and other pedestrians to wait until traffic is clear or stopped and directs their travel across the streets.
- Holds hand-held stop sign at appropriate height for traffic to observe.
- Understands and applies verbal instructions.
- Utilizes appropriate safety vests, equipment and procedures.
- Travels and reports to assigned locations in a timely manner which can vary.
- Directs the flow of traffic in and out of school grounds during school crossing hours to maintain as clear a road passage as possible.
Additional Duties
- This position requires the ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems and office computer.
- Performs other related duties as directed by the supervisor and/or the designee.
Physical Demands
- Frequent stooping and bending is required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects.
- Flexibility is important for climbing over and around obstacles and in the event of sudden movement when avoiding dangers.
- Mental alertness is required for fine discriminations and decisions concerning subtle cues of impending danger.
- Physical and mental demands may change dramatically within seconds, therefore, incumbents must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness.
Typical Qualifications
- Minimum Education and Training: High School Diploma or GED; attend and pass annual required training classes provided by MCSO; attend and pass the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) School Crossing Guard Training, as required by Florida Statutes 316.75.

- Physical demands include frequent stooping and bending, manual and finger dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects.
Supplemental Information
- Work environment may vary. The majority of tasks are performed outdoors and may occasionally be during inclement weather and dark hours.
Removal
- Reasons for job removal without fault include economic conditions, inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks.
- Failure to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault.
- In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
Background Checks
- Any Driver's License suspension in the last three (3) years.
- Any conviction of, or pled to "Driving under the Influence," as defined in F.S.S. 316.193 in the last three (3) years (Sworn and Civilian).
- Any illegal drug use including marijuana within the last year.
- Any controlled substance (cocaine, crack, heroin, etc.) use within the last five years.
- Any hallucinogenic (LSD, PSP, Mushrooms, Ecstasy, etc.) use within the last five years.
- Any HGH / Steroid usage within the last year.
- Any sales and/or deliveries of any illegal substance in adult life.
- Any discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States that is dishonorable, bad conduct, and other than honorable. (Uncharacterized will be reviewed on a case by case basis).
- Pled guilty or nolo contendre to a felony.
- Pled guilty or nolo contendre to a felony or a misdemeanor that involves false statements, whether or not adjudication was withheld or sentence suspended.
