About the role
Part-time position starting immediately. Works in the School-based Support department.
Responsibilities
- Ensure Safe Crossings: Guide students and families safely across designated crosswalks and intersections during school hours.
- Use a handheld STOP sign/paddle to control traffic and signal when it is safe to proceed.
- Stay vigilant and quickly recognize potential dangers, acting promptly to ensure student safety.
- Communicate clearly and courteously to students, parents, and drivers, using clear hand signals and verbal cues.
- Collaborate with school staff and local law enforcement to manage the drop-off/pick-up process.
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and neighbors, serving as a role model and ambassador for KIPP Miami.
- Uphold safety regulations, monitor the environment, and report incidents to school administrators.
Qualifications
- Effective Communicator: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to give clear, firm instructions while maintaining a courteous and friendly demeanor.
- Community Commitment: Passion for working with children and contributing to the school community. Ideal for parents or family members of KIPP Miami students or local community members who want to be involved in the school.
- Training & Certification: Florida School Crossing Guard Certification is preferred. Candidates without certification must be willing to complete the required training program.
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand and walk outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions (heat, rain, etc.).
- Sufficient strength and mobility to move quickly in front of oncoming traffic if needed, and arm dexterity to hold up a STOP sign for several minutes at a time.
Required Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Must be at least 18 years old (required for school crossing guards).
- Ability to meet all background screening requirements for working in a Florida school.
