About the role

School counselors utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive services, and address identified student needs through a comprehensive counseling program. They advise and guide students, parents, and educators, and implement various counseling strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with academic, career, and personal/social development goals.
  • Provide individual and group counseling sessions.
  • Consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, and other educational resources.
  • Manage and communicate the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Use assessment procedures to determine and structure counseling services.
  • Maintain records of student academic performance, behavior, and attendance.
  • Aid in educational and career planning for students.
  • Interpret and utilize student data for decision-making.
  • Prepare and present reports related to counseling activities.
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process.
  • Maintain resources for education stakeholders.
  • Conduct annual program audits and analyze data for program improvement.
  • Measure and share results of school counseling program activities.
  • Adhere to laws, policies, and ethical standards.

Qualifications

  • Education, Training, and Experience: Master's degree in school counseling, three semester hours of special education coursework, and a Maryland Educator Professional Certificate with School Counselor endorsement.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of school counseling principles, curriculum, instructional techniques, and data analysis; strong written and oral communication skills; outstanding leadership and human relations skills.
