About the role
School counselors utilize leadership, advocacy, and collaboration to promote student success, provide preventive services, and address identified student needs through a comprehensive counseling program. They advise and guide students, parents, and educators, and implement various counseling strategies.
Responsibilities
- Assist students with academic, career, and personal/social development goals.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions.
- Consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, and other educational resources.
- Manage and communicate the comprehensive school counseling program.
- Use assessment procedures to determine and structure counseling services.
- Maintain records of student academic performance, behavior, and attendance.
- Aid in educational and career planning for students.
- Interpret and utilize student data for decision-making.
- Prepare and present reports related to counseling activities.
- Implement an effective referral and follow-up process.
- Maintain resources for education stakeholders.
- Conduct annual program audits and analyze data for program improvement.
- Measure and share results of school counseling program activities.
- Adhere to laws, policies, and ethical standards.
Qualifications
- Education, Training, and Experience: Master's degree in school counseling, three semester hours of special education coursework, and a Maryland Educator Professional Certificate with School Counselor endorsement.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of school counseling principles, curriculum, instructional techniques, and data analysis; strong written and oral communication skills; outstanding leadership and human relations skills.
