School Counselor
Position Summary
Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses all students' academic, career, and social/emotional development.
Essential Duties
Develops, implements, and manages a comprehensive school counseling program as outlined by the American School Counselor Association.
Develops activities and resources to implement and evaluate the program.
Involves other school staff in making decisions about the school counseling program.
Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders (i.e., administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community/business leaders).
Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.
Accurately interprets test results and other student data.
Aids teachers with the educational placement of students by using appropriate educational assessment strategies.
Helps the school administration identify and remedy school policies and programs that inhibit student and staff development.
Helps the school administration develop policies and programs that benefit student and staff development.
Reports to the school administration and staff about the annual goals and services of the counseling program.
Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs; consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs; implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed; accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
Provides appropriate information to school personnel about the comprehensive school counseling program; assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of program implementation and effectiveness.
Adheres to ethical standards of the counseling profession and abides by the laws, policies, and procedures that govern the schools.
Participates in professional associations and upgrades professional knowledge and skills as needed.
Serves as a member of the school-based committee as appropriate.
Education/Experience Requirements
N.C. An Educator License in School Counseling is required.
Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university, OR Master's degree in equivalent field with add-on school counseling licensure required.
Completion of school counseling internship.
