About the Role

As a School Counselor (CY-1710), you will provide a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design, developmental in implementation, and supports students in academic achievement, individual student planning, and personal and social development. The incumbent also serves as a consultant to educators, families, and community partners.

Responsibilities

• Provide individual and group academic counseling services to help students succeed in academics, including referrals to social services or community resources as appropriate.
• Counsel students regularly on careers, educational goals, social interests, and other personal matters to help them explore alternatives.
• Utilize diagnostic and assessment procedures as needed.
• Collect, organize, and interpret student data for appraisal purposes, preparing case summaries for professional use.
• Use data for planning, implementation, progress review, and evaluation of students' counseling plans.
• Set up and maintain files and records of individual and group counseling sessions.
• Prepare letters to parents, progress reports, referrals, and related documents while safeguarding confidential student data.
• Work closely with academic staff to monitor students' academic growth and recommend conferences to address individual student problems.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered under the Military Selective Service Act and the Defense Authorization Act of 1986.
• A background security investigation will be required for all new hires; appointment is contingent on successful completion and favorable adjudication.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, as the role may require operating a government-owned or leased motor vehicle as an incidental duty.
• Must possess and maintain valid School Counselor licensure/certification in the state where the position is located.
• This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act.
• Probationary period of one academic year (two full semesters) is required to evaluate fitness and continued employment.
• Initial appointments under Public Law 95-561 do not confer competitive nor career status.

Qualifications

Education

• Must have a Master’s degree (or higher) in guidance and counseling, psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Official or unofficial transcripts (photocopy or original) must be submitted; advisement or web-printouts are not acceptable. Official transcripts are required upon selection.
• Education must be obtained from an accredited or pre-accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For foreign education, credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education equivalency.

Licensure/Certification

• Must possess and maintain a valid state-issued School Counselor licensure or certification in the state where the position is located. Emergency or provisional certifications may be accepted under state-specific conditions.
• Applicants with valid state certification in a state other than where the position is located may be considered but must obtain full certification in the position’s state within two full contract terms.

Pay

Pay is determined based on degree and graduate semester hours in guidance and counseling, as follows:

• Pay Level 21: Master’s Degree in counseling or related field.
• Pay Level 22: Master’s Degree and 15 graduate semester hours of related work.
• Pay Level 23: Master’s Degree and 30 graduate semester hours of related work.
• Pay Level 24: Earned Doctorate in counseling or related field.

Experience may be considered for determining pay increments, with a maximum of 17 years creditable. Pay rates are modified based on the school calendar for the location (Modified Hourly/Date Rate).

• This position is covered by a bargaining unit (Federation of Indian Service Employees, American Federation of Teachers Local 4521).
