Job Summary

The School Bus Mechanic provides daily repair and maintenance service on a variety of school buses, automobiles, and heavy-duty equipment to assure their safe, effective, and efficient operation in a timely manner.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Fingerprinting and successful completion of a criminal background check required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License and evidence of insurability.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Two years' experience diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance of heavy equipment, diesel motors, and other motor vehicles.
  • Must have or obtain a CDL License with School Bus Endorsement within 90 days of hire.
  • Must have or obtain Utah state safety inspection license within 12 months of hire.
  • Able to roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, stand for extended periods of time, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Speak, read, write, analyze, and follow written and verbal communication in English; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally or in writing; present information in front of groups of people.

Prior to Hire

  • Must successfully pass and maintain the ability to complete the USBE Physical Assessment Standards for Utah School Bus Drivers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years' experience diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance of school buses.
  • ASE Certification (Master School Bus Mechanic).
  • Certifications in any alternative fuel vehicles (including electric).
  • Degree in the automotive field.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Performs the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of school busses and all district vehicles.
  • Follows prescribed preventative maintenance procedures and performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles.
  • Performs services and repairs on school buses, including but not limited to, diesel engines, injectors, pumps, automatic and standard transmission repair and replacement, wheelchair lifts, air brake systems and electrical systems.
  • Responds to emergency road calls during and after regularly scheduled work hours as needed.
  • Drives equipment in and out of repair shop; operates and road tests repaired vehicles to ensure proper function.
  • Talks to equipment operators, drives, and operates vehicles, or uses diagnostic equipment to identify problems and malfunctions.
  • Uses most major medium duty electronic diagnostic tools (Cummins Insite, Allison DOC).
  • Promotes high standards of safety and housekeeping methods in work-connected areas.
  • Maintains vehicle repair records including the nature of the repair, labor hours, and parts used in making repairs.
  • Participates in continuing educational training for new techniques and job skills as requested.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, training and seminars, as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively.
  • Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform the duties of the position.
  • Aid other personnel in other district and department transportation related needs as required, and perform other duties as may be needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Adapt to changing work priorities, work with limited supervision, prioritize, be attentive to details, and meet strict deadlines and schedules with frequent interruptions.
  • Aid other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

  • Significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
  • Some climbing and balancing.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
  • Significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Generally the job requires 75% walking, 20% standing, and 5% sitting.
  • This job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
