About the Role

Assist in planning, scheduling, and dispatching bus runs to ensure safe and efficient transportation of District pupils. Substitute for school bus drivers as needed, maintain required records, and perform related duties under general supervision from the Transportation Operation Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all daily bus routes are covered and assign substitute drivers/routes as necessary.
  • Book and estimate costs for field trips; assign drivers to field trips.
  • Maintain accurate records related to transportation activities.
  • Assist in training for bus evacuation drills at school sites.
  • Help plan and update fall bus routes to accommodate shifts in student population.
  • Serve as a substitute driver when needed.
  • Perform check-out of bus safety equipment.
  • Act as a liaison between the Department of Transportation and school sites, relaying complaints, problems, or concerns.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing school bus operation.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written/oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and analyze problems to develop effective solutions.
  • Safe operation of a school bus.
  • Physical capability to perform job tasks, including prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, and reaching.
  • Ability to lift, support, or drag up to 150 pounds for short periods.
  • Climb 3 feet of steps into/out of the bus.
  • Continuous use of hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate bus controls.
  • Range of simple to firm grasping to manipulate steering wheel, gears, levers, and secure students in car seats/wheelchairs.
  • Hearing (with or without assistive devices) sufficient to monitor students, receive radio communications, and detect outside noises (sirens, horns, brakes).
  • Speaking (with or without assistive devices) to give instructions to students and communicate professionally with parents/staff.
  • Visual acuity (with or without assistive devices) to pass driving tests, read signs, detect road hazards, and operate the bus safely in reduced visibility.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from the twelfth grade.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a school bus driver.
  • Possession of a valid California Class B Driver’s license with Passenger endorsement (Class A with a "P" endorsement acceptable).
  • Possession of a California School Bus Driver’s Certificate and a valid medical certificate.

Physical and Environmental Hazards

  • Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and bodily fluids.
  • Exposure to physically aggressive or non-compliant students/parents.
