School Bus Driver (part-time)

About the role

The Part-time Bus Driver reports to the Director of Operations and principals of both upper and lower schools. This position involves driving a school transportation vehicle, loading and unloading students, planning routes, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and completing necessary reports.

Responsibilities

• Pick up and safely discharge authorized students at authorized stops (field trips, college trips, games, etc.)
• Operate a special ramp bus and load/unload students in wheelchairs
• Transport students and illuminators/coaches on field trips and/or school related events to various locations
• Plan necessary route(s) and stops as needed with supervisor
• Maintain order and proper discipline of student passengers in accordance with school/CMO policies
• Conduct safety and operational inspections of assigned vehicle daily
• Report needed mechanical repairs when necessary
• Service buses with fuel, including but not limited to propane, gas, diesel fuel and oil
• Check and, when necessary, fill tires, and batteries
• Perform periodic safety drills as required by law
• Complete necessary reports upon request
• Ensure the safety of all students when entering, riding, and leaving the bus
• Maintain a clean and mechanically sound bus at all times
• Attend various meetings regarding safety, first aid, and training updates as required
• Attend driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of Connecticut Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children
• Operate a two-way radio or other communication instruments as provided
• Obey all traffic laws and any and all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
• Drive at a speed, which is both within the legal limit and reasonable for existing conditions
• Report all accidents, student incidents, injuries and/or other pertinent activities and complete required reports
• Refrain from use of profanity and use of tobacco products while on the bus, with or without student passengers or outside of the bus while in the company of students
• Conform to School/CMO policies and regulations, state and DMV policies and administrative regulations, including but not limited to alcohol and substance abuse, and is subject to random substance abuse testing

Requirements

• Associate’s degree preferred; high school diploma required
• Valid and appropriate Connecticut Driver's License; a Class CDL A, B or C license with P or S endorsement; and a Connecticut School Bus Driver's Certificate in good standing
• No less than 3 years of experience driving a 36 passenger or greater student transport, school bus, or like vehicle
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong attention to detail

• Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates and the general public
• Ability to maintain patience, emotional stability and is not inclined to take chances, keeping the safety of the students as a primary goal
• Ability to make work decisions in accordance with rules, regulations and policies, state statutes and local ordinances and procedures in accordance with standards and policies, including those of the Board
