School Bus Driver (DPS) (Promotional and Open Competitive)

Examination date: week of September 14, 2026. Certified candidates will receive exam details via email.
Responsibilities
- Operate a school bus to safely transport students with and without disabilities to and from school.
- Perform and record daily safety checks on bus components (tires, lights, fuel, oil, windshield wipers) and report defective equipment for repair.
- Conduct emergency and evacuation drills, complete incident reports, and report violations of state school bus law.
- Maintain control over student behavior to ensure safe driving conditions.
- Communicate with dispatchers and supervisors using a two-way radio transmitter.
Requirements
- Four years of experience operating over-the-road motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, or SUVs).
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Valid Ohio Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with School Bus and Passenger endorsements, and no air brake restriction at time of examination.
- Must be insurable by the Board of Education’s insurance carrier (disqualifying factors include DUI or more than 6 points on driving record in the past 3 years).
- Able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must pass an annual Ohio Department of Education physical.
- U.S. citizenship or legal right to work in the United States at time of application.
- Must pass Federal and State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation background check.
Qualifications
- Military service applicants who attain a passing grade receive an additional 20% credit. A non-returnable copy of DD214 or Certificate of Service (indicating Honorable Discharge) must be submitted.
- Promotional credit is available for current full-time permanent Dayton Public Schools employees. Seniority breaks identical scores.
- Open competitive applicants: identical scores are broken by (1) military credit and (2) random selection.
Examination dates and times are subject to change. Calculators will be provided. Final appointment may require passing a medical examination, drug screen, background investigation, and providing employment authorization documentation.
