About the Role

This full-time, benefits-eligible position involves covering classroom teacher, specialist, or teaching assistant roles based on daily school needs. Additional responsibilities may include covering for office assistants or supporting instruction alongside a classroom teacher.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in the absence of the classroom teacher.
  • Deliver lesson plans created and left by the classroom teacher.
  • Meet and instruct students at designated times and locations.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within provided resources.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show evidence of preparation upon request.
  • Encourage students to maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Uphold school and county policies and procedures.
  • Maintain records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Assist in enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
  • Cooperate with staff and seek clarity from administration regarding student or instructional concerns.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by administration.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Priority given to candidates with prior teaching experience or eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License.
  • Ability to develop empathetic relationships with students and learn specialized instructional/management techniques.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.

Working Conditions

Duties are performed in various school settings, including classrooms, gyms, cafeterias, auditoriums, and recreational areas. The role requires frequent walking, standing, and light lifting (up to 40 pounds). Occasional tasks may include:

  • Traveling with students on field trips.
  • Moving students using wheelchairs or other mechanical devices.
  • Lifting equipment (e.g., audio-visuals) up to 50 pounds.
  • Attending meetings, parent conferences, or training beyond normal hours.
  • Daily close contact with children to support classroom management.
  • Regular interaction with staff, parents, medical professionals, and community members, requiring tact and diplomacy.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 7.25 hours/day.
  • 10-month school year (188 days).
