About the role
Scale Operator role in a scrap metal, recycling, logistics, or industrial yard environment. The position combines customer service, administrative accuracy, cash handling, dispatch coordination, and safety compliance.
Responsibilities
- Customer & Driver Interaction
- Greet customers and drivers professionally.
- Identify material grades and direct vehicles to the correct yard locations.
- Manage difficult customer situations calmly and professionally.
- Answer and redirect incoming phone calls.
- Scale Operations
- Weigh incoming and outgoing vehicles.
- Create and process scale tickets.
- Record vehicle information, material descriptions, weights, contract numbers, and load destinations.
- Ensure all transactions are accurately documented.
- Administrative Duties
- Maintain purchase and sales records.
- Assign purchase order and sales order numbers.
- File, fax, and distribute scale tickets.
- Keep records organized and accurate.
- Payment Processing
- Process customer payments and adjustments.
- Issue cheques and cash payments when required.
- Handle daily cash reconciliation.
- Work with buyers to adjust contract pricing when necessary.
- Communication & Coordination
- Maintain radio communication with yard personnel.
- Coordinate with dispatch, operations, management, sales, and IT teams.
- Respond appropriately to emergency communications.
- Safety & Compliance
- Enforce PPE requirements for visitors and drivers.
- Follow and promote safe work procedures.
- Monitor yard access and gate operations.
