About the role

This posting supports the Upstate SC Works Workforce Development Month Job Fair on September 22, 2026, for the following areas: Abbeville, Anderson, Belton, Fountain Inn, Gaffney, Greenville, Greenwood, Greer, Laurens, Newberry, Pickens, Seneca, Spartanburg, Union, & Woodruff. The position is a License Examiner with the Department of Motor Vehicles, located in the Upstate region of South Carolina at the offices listed above. The job fair will be held at McAlister Square Mall, 225 S. Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, SC 29607.

Responsibilities

• Administer road test examinations for Class A, B, C, D, E, F, and M vehicles (including CDLs if in a CDL office).
• Determine applicant's physical and mental fitness and competency to safely operate motor vehicles.
• Administer written, oral, and automated examinations to assess knowledge of laws and driving procedures.
• Perform pre‑trip inspection of the vehicle operated by the applicant.
• Examine, accept, prepare, enter, and print all documents required for issuing driver licenses, beginner permits, identification cards, original/duplicate transfers, temporary and replacement vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, and titles (including repossessed, abandoned, salvaged, homemade, and rebuilt vehicles).
• Perform edits of customer’s name and address fields.
• Process Motor Vehicle Registration Requests.
• Research suspension inquiries, modify driver International Registration Plan, registration credentials, and issue automobile dealership licenses.
• Answer customer inquiries regarding driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance requirements by phone and in person.
• Greet and direct customers to appropriate office areas.
• Collect all required fees and donations for the Donate Life Fund.
• Reconcile and prepare individual daily reports and refund request documents.
• Compute vehicle sales taxes and make weight adjustments to the vehicle record file.
• Receive, code, and issue receipts for surrendered license plates; box surrendered plates and complete pick‑up requests.
• Perform routine maintenance on equipment.
• Fax, mail documents, and run errands for the branch office (e.g., trips to the post office and bank deposits).

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
• At least 21 years of age with one year of driving experience.
• Successful completion of a nationwide criminal background check (including fingerprinting).
• Before administering CDL knowledge/skill tests, complete a formal CDL test examiner trainer course and examination (Introduction to CDL Licensing System, Overview of the CDL Tests and Knowledge Tests).
