Purpose

Operates basic saw types such as pop-up, miter, web saws, etc. to cut planks, timbers, or boards according to work orders.

Essential Duties

  • Reviews work order to determine cut(s) to be made
  • Adjusts saw for required cuts
  • Adjusts speed of saw and feed rolls
  • Observes automatic feeding of lumber to saw or pushes end of lumber into feed rolls
  • Stacks cut lumber after processing
  • Advises supervisor of dull saw blades
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Language – Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers; ability to print and speak simple sentences
  • Mathematical – Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to read at tape measure at 1/16 inch
  • Reasoning – Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions; ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables
  • Other – Must be able to identify species, size, and grade of lumber

Work Environment & Physical Activity

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
