About the role
The Sawmill Maintenance Manager will support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a pine sawmill. This is a hands-on role where you'll troubleshoot, repair, and complete preventative maintenance and improvement projects, especially during non-production time (Fridays).
Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and adjustments for sawmill equipment
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and production equipment issues
- Safeguard and maintain the operation of saws, conveyors, log handling equipment, edgers, trimmers, stackers, hydraulic systems, motors, bearings, chains, belts, sensors, and controls
- Plan and complete preventative maintenance tasks to minimize downtime and enhance reliability
- Respond to production downtime issues and work efficiently to restore equipment to safe operating condition
- Inspect equipment for wear, damage, alignment issues, loose components, hydraulic leaks, electrical concerns, and guarding issues
- Communicate equipment concerns, repair needs, downtime causes, and project priorities to management
- Maintain maintenance records and documentation as required
- Aid with installations, upgrades, fabrication, welding, modifications, and continuous improvement projects
- Support lockout/tagout, guarding, housekeeping, and safe work practices
- Identify and help correct unsafe conditions and communicate safety concerns promptly
- Ensure equipment is returned to service only when it is safe to operate
Requirements
- Strong mechanical maintenance skills in an industrial, sawmill, lumber, manufacturing, or similar environment
- Working knowledge of electrical troubleshooting and repair
- Working knowledge of hydraulic systems (leaks, pressure issues, cylinders, hoses, pumps, valves)
- Ability and willingness to perform hands-on maintenance work
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and determine practical repair solutions
- Ability to work safely around saws, conveyors, moving equipment, forklifts, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems
- Clear communication with management, production employees, and outside vendors/support personnel
- Reliable attendance and ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Must be at least 18 years old
Preferred
- Prior sawmill, pallet, lumber, wood products, or heavy industrial maintenance experience
- Experience with preventative maintenance programs
- Experience with welding/fabrication and common mechanical components (bearings, chains, belts, gearboxes, motors, sensors, controls)
- PLC, motor control, VFD, or industrial electrical troubleshooting experience
- Experience supporting safety programs and equipment guarding/lockout-tagout improvements
- Forklift, loader, manlift, or mobile equipment experience

Pay
$30.00–$35.00 per hour (depending on experience)
Schedule
This is a full-time position. Production schedules typically do not include Friday production, creating an important opportunity for planned repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, and downtime projects.
