Sanitation Manager
About the role
In this role, you will lead development, compliance, training, problem solving, best practice development, and technical support in sanitation at an SFI facility that processes multiple category products. You will direct the work activities of the facility sanitation team, including hourly and salaried sanitation Partners, and facilitate the development of salaried sanitation Partners while supporting the development of other facility salaried Partners.
You will collaborate with Operations, Enterprise Quality and Food Safety, sanitation chemical and equipment suppliers, and construction contractors to ensure equipment, processes, and the facility environment are suitably designed, maintained, cleaned, and monitored to ensure food safety and quality.
Responsibilities
- Direct and train Plant Sanitarians, Sanitation Partners, and Janitorial Partners.
- Interface with plant leaders and Enterprise Quality to develop qualified teams that provide a sanitary operating environment effectively and efficiently.
- Oversee and assist in the development of SSOPs, Master Sanitation Schedules (MSS), CIP processes, and related SOPs in all facility departments.
- Perform troubleshooting and assist with CIP programming validation.
- Investigate sanitation issues and analyze data from pathogen monitoring, environmental quality monitoring, MSS, pre-op inspections, quality and food safety audits (internal, third-party, customer, and regulatory), customer complaints, and other sources to identify trends and implement corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to prevent product contamination, maintain or extend shelf-life, reduce customer complaints, or prevent product rejection.
- Work closely with Engineering, Enterprise Quality and Food Safety, and equipment vendors to ensure new or modified equipment meets sanitary design and regulatory requirements prior to purchase and installation. Validate that equipment modifications or new equipment can be effectively cleaned and sanitized to acceptable microbial levels.
- Collaborate with sanitation chemical providers and Pest Management contractors to maximize technical expertise and drive cost-effective results.
- Lead plant sanitation verification and auditing processes, including environmental monitoring, and work with appropriate Partners to address and resolve deficiencies.
- Lead facility projects to improve sanitation and monitoring processes and achieve cost savings.
- Ensure compliance with Food Safety and Food Quality Plans, as well as customer requirements, alongside the leadership team. Interpret and communicate customer requirements to plant production and support groups.
- Establish and audit Process Control Plans (PCPs), Critical Control Points (CCPs), and Standard Operating Procedures to define and monitor processes, ensuring customer requirements are met.
- Review incidents where procedures are not met and determine appropriate corrective actions for Partners failing to follow standard procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Dairy Science, Microbiology, or a related field.
- 5–7 years of experience in Sanitation, Plant Production, or Quality Leadership.
- PCQI (Preventive Controls Qualified Individual) certification.
- Basic knowledge of microbiology.
- Technical knowledge of Clean-Out-of-Place (COP) and Clean-In-Place (CIP) systems, cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, sanitary design of food processing equipment, auditing experience, and proficiency with computer and process excellence tools.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
