Sanitary Sewer System Supervisor

About the role

This is a supervisory position involved with the repair and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system. The work is performed under general direction and in accordance with prescribed procedures with wide leeway in assigning work to subordinates. The incumbent supervises a number of technical and unskilled employees.

Responsibilities

• Assigns work to work crews in the maintenance and repair of sanitary sewers including pumping station operations;
• Works with engineers and survey crews in determining work needs in the repair, maintenance and replacement of existing sewer lines;
• Assigns and checks on work involving the cleaning of catch basins, cleaning of sewer lines and the maintenance and operation of pumps and pumping stations;
• Responds to complaints and assigns work crews to clean up outstanding problems;
• Personally supervises the work on major construction or sewer replacement projects;
• Participates in the budgetary process by reporting project costs and identifying incomplete or outstanding work problems.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, terminology and safety precautions in the maintenance of sewer lines;
• Thorough knowledge in the maintenance, repair and operation of a sanitary sewer and pumping station system;
• Ability to plan and direct the work of others;
• Ability to receive and follow complex written and oral directions in the repair, maintenance and operation of a sewer system;
• Ability to keep records and to prepare reports;
• Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Qualifications

Either:

• Four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer systems including pumping stations of which two years shall have been on a supervisory level; or
• Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State recognized two year college with an Associates Degree in engineering technology and two years of supervisory or administrative experience in work described above; or
• An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of the above options.

All new hires are required to pass a pre-employment drug test as a condition of employment. Broome County residency is required at time of appointment.
