About the role
The Assistant Director of Development Services is a key leadership position within the City of San Luis. This role supports the Director of Development Services in overseeing and managing the city’s planning, zoning, building, and code enforcement functions. The Assistant Director will assist in the administration of development-related policies, programs, and projects to ensure compliance with city codes, state laws, and community goals.
Responsibilities
- Assist the Director in managing the daily operations of the Development Services Department, including planning, zoning, building safety, and code enforcement.
- Oversee the review and processing of development applications, permits, and plans to ensure compliance with city codes, zoning ordinances, and land-use policies.
- Provide professional guidance and support to staff, developers, contractors, and the public on development-related matters.
- Coordinate with other city departments, agencies, and external stakeholders to facilitate development projects and resolve issues.
- Prepare and present reports, recommendations, and updates to the City Council, Planning & Zoning Commission, and other boards as required.
- Assist in the development and implementation of long-range planning initiatives, including updates to the General Plan, zoning ordinances, and other regulatory documents.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to land use, building codes, and environmental standards.
- Supervise department staff, including hiring, training, evaluating performance, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Respond to inquiries, complaints, and requests from the public, elected officials, and other stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
- Manage departmental budgets, contracts, and resources effectively.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning, development services, or a related field, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory or leadership role.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of urban planning, zoning, land use, building codes, and development regulations.
- Experience with municipal government processes and procedures is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply complex regulations, policies, and laws.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with GIS, permitting software, or other relevant tools.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or other relevant professional certifications.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
