Sampler Technician I
About the Location
Morenci operations is an open-pit copper mining complex located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191. The site has been in continuous operation since 1939 and includes two concentrators, a crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system, four SX plants, and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.
Morenci is a company town offering amenities such as company housing or a $750 monthly housing allowance for on-site employees (subject to program guidelines), a newly constructed daycare and community center, library, health-care facilities, state-of-the-art fitness centers, a movie theater, and a skate park. The dedicated Parks and Recreation Division plans activities for all ages.
Responsibilities
- Identify drill holes requiring sampling from the Drill Pattern and coordinate work schedules with dispatch, drilling, and blasting teams.
- Obtain representative samples following appropriate SOPs, ensuring samples are equally spaced, meet minimum weight requirements, and are correctly labeled.
- Assist with quality control by collecting duplicate samples from designated blast holes, ensuring proper labeling for laboratory staff.
- Transport and deliver all samples to the assay laboratory in a timely manner.
- Perform entry-level analytical laboratory tasks, such as preparing samples for analysis or assisting with routine chemical analysis and reporting.
- Provide technical support to ore control and surveying staff as required.
- Verify that equipment is functional and operating properly, and clean sampling equipment after each use.
- Perform preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- One (1) year of experience in a relevant field (e.g., sampling, equipment maintenance, or related areas).
- Knowledge of sampling equipment, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Ability to conduct preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Skill in planning, prioritizing, and scheduling daily work assignments.
- Proficiency in safely using, maintaining, and repairing specialized equipment, including GIS/GPS mapping techniques.
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Knowledge of site processes, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Ability to use various computer software applications, including Microsoft Office.
Candidates may be required to pass a medical exam, complete all required training/testing, and work a non-standard schedule (including shift work) at a 24/7, 365-day operation. Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment with mandatory pre-employment and ongoing testing.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
Pay
The estimated pay range for this role is $21.00 - $29.00/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits, or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills, and other job-related factors. The role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance.
