SALT Senior Associate

Responsibilities

• Aid in the accurate and timely completion of income, franchise and sales/use tax projects under deadlines and within budgets.
• Engage in all phases of state and local income and franchise tax engagements, including data collection, preparation of multi-state tax returns, and workpapers.
• Identify and address potential tax issues, propose solutions, and assess feasibility.
• Handle routine inquiries from other KSM practice areas, clients, and state agencies.
• Support state tax examinations, audit defense strategies, response to notices, protests, and Voluntary Disclosure Agreement initiatives.
• Conduct research and analysis, interpret state laws, cases, administrative hearings, and other relevant communications.
• Stay updated on proposed state tax legislation and multi-state tax law changes.
• Draft internal communications and presentations regarding state tax law updates and training materials.
• Foster a positive work environment for the SALT team and enhance interactions with other practices to promote SALT within the firm.
• Mentor and guide staff in technical and professional development.
• Involvement in practice development efforts through referral sourcing, community engagement, and industry activities.

  Requirements/Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 calendar years of tax experience and familiarity with state and local tax concepts.
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting and/or taxation, or an advanced degree (e.g., law degree) and/or related work experience.
  • A positive attitude, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • A minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education annually to maintain and develop technical and business skills.
  • Proficiency in tax compliance software, legal research tools, and Microsoft Office suite.
