Sales Tax Auditor

What You Will Do

• Play a key role in ensuring compliance, supporting taxpayers, and protecting state revenue.
• Learn state tax laws, audit policies, and procedures during initial training.
• Conduct audits independently within six months of training, with ongoing support.
• Progress from auditing small businesses to large businesses over time.

The Ideal Candidate

• Has a bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or economics.
• Has prior professional experience in the accounting field.
• Is an effective communicator who can make informed, confident decisions based on established facts and training.
• Has a strong work ethic, solid interpersonal skills, sound judgment, discretion with sensitive information, and a consistently positive, professional attitude.
• Has knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or the ability to develop this knowledge.
• Has knowledge of generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS) or the ability to develop this knowledge.
• Has auditing concepts, standards, and objectives related to financial records across diverse business types or the ability to develop this knowledge.
• Is proficient in Microsoft, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• Will receive comprehensive training on South Dakota tax laws.
• Can deliver professional, accurate, and courteous customer service.
• Can maintain strong attention to detail throughout all stages of the audit process.
• Can remain composed, focused, and effective in challenging or high-pressure situations.
• Can manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
• Can interact with taxpayers and colleagues in a tactful, respectful, and professional manner.
• Can communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Can conduct audits of accounting systems and financial records.
• Can work with electronic data and automated accounting systems, including extracting relevant information.
• Can reconstruct income, sales, and expense data to determine accurate tax liabilities.
• Can adapt to varying work environments, including assignments outside the office.
• Can read, interpret, and apply tax laws and administrative rules.
• Can travel in and out of state approximately 10-20% of the time.
