About the role

The Un-Registered Medical Technologist performs a variety of routine and specialized studies on blood, urine, and body fluid samples as directed by a physician. Responsibilities include assembling supplies and equipment, recording and reporting test results, and maintaining quality control procedures. The position also involves assisting the department Laboratory Supervisor in daily operations and teaching new employees.

Responsibilities

• Consults with and informs supervisor of activities, needs, and problems.
• May act as charge person of a department in the absence of the department supervisor.
• Establishes own work plan and priorities, using established procedures to ensure timely completion of assigned work.
• Complies with established standards and practices/procedures.
• Assembles supplies and equipment, ensuring proper functioning and cleanliness of equipment and work area.
• Labels, collects, receives, stores, and discards specimens properly.
• Records, reviews, certifies, and reports test results as required.
• Maintains quality control procedures to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.
• Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions and out-of-control test results.
• Assists in teaching and training of new employees.
• Fulfills established hospital, laboratory, departmental, and regulatory standards, policies, procedures, and precautions to ensure a safe work environment.
• Follows safe work practices and utilizes required personal protective equipment and safety equipment.
• Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to maintain a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
• Respects cultural diversity for all customers (internal and external).
• Communicates effectively with internal and external customers, respecting differences in cultures, values, beliefs, and ages, utilizing interpreters when needed.

Requirements

• Twelve months of clinical education/training in a school of Medical Technology or its equivalent.
• Three months on-the-job training to become familiar with hospital policies and procedures and proficient in job requirements.
• Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or related science.
• At least five years (full-time) acceptable clinical experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, or Microbiology within the last ten years.
• At least two years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist and a certified medical technologist.
• ASCP eligible, such as a recent graduate awaiting the MT test.
• Other acceptable Certification agency.
• Physical requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, use hands to finger, feel, reach with hands, climb, or balance, talk or hear, stand/walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste or smell, lift up to 25 lbs., exposure to blood-borne pathogens, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to infectious/contagious diseases, exposure to flammable, explosive gases, exposure to dust or other irritants, exposure to grease or oils, exposure to hot or noisy equipment, exposure to a moderate noise level.
• Safety equipment used: face shields, gloves, lab coat.
