About the role
The Safety Superintendent oversees the terminal's safety program, ensuring a safe workplace for all employees, contractors, visitors, and the public. They supervise personnel, conduct JHA, and develop safety programs. They also compile and analyze statistical data and maintain liaisons with external organizations.
Responsibilities
- Supervise personnel in operating procedures and make hiring and termination decisions.
- Plan, implement, and coordinate programs to reduce accidents and injuries.
- Conduct or direct research studies to identify and manage safety hazards.
- Develop and train superintendents in accordance with state and federal laws.
- Ensure compliance with PCMSC (Safety Code) and attend meetings with member companies.
- Work with SSA lawyers to mitigate OSHA citations.
- Attend monthly meetings with member companies to discuss serious injuries and prevention.
- Investigate ILWU and IAM injuries and report to OSHA when necessary.
- Make sure Safety Talks are given daily and employees wear proper PPE.
- Devise methods to evaluate safety programs and conduct evaluations.
- Evaluate safety-related publications and participate in professional activities.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Safety management or similar field desired
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive responsibilities in field safety and health program management
- Certified Safety Professional designation desirable
- Strong organizational skills
- Familiarity with State and Federal regulatory systems and structures
- Basic understanding of industry safety standards
- Familiarity with terminal operations
- Commitment to continual development and renewal of required certifications
- Computer skills for safety reporting, data analysis, and communications
Qualifications
- Desired: Bachelor's degree in Safety management or similar field
