About the Role
Under limited supervision, the Safety Specialist will provide front-line support for our Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) program at your assigned facility. This role requires a high level of engagement and initiative, monitoring the facility for emerging issues and risks and ensuring they are addressed. The position reports to the Director of Quality & HSE but will also take direction from the Corporate Safety Professional, who supports HSE across all Maverick Power facilities.
Upwards of 80% of the job is spent on the production floor observing, performing audits, and interacting with employees. Onsite travel: 10%.
Responsibilities
- Begin the shift on the production floor, aligning with teams and participating in pre-task plans and stretch-and-flex activities to ensure teams understand risks and have what they need to work safely.
- Monitor sites for compliance with applicable health, safety, and environmental legal requirements and take appropriate steps to ensure compliance.
- Perform near-miss and incident investigations (injury or property damage), lead root cause analysis, and develop corrective actions.
- Identify, document, and recommend resolutions for unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and employee safety suggestions; follow through to ensure corrections or improvements are made.
- Lead first aid and emergency response activities for the assigned facility and provide care for injured employees as needed.
- Conduct new hire orientation and required training classes.
- Continuously educate, coach, and mentor employees on safety.
- Conduct safety briefs with all contractors or subcontractors working at a Maverick Power facility to ensure they understand our safety requirements.
- Compile safety data, photographs, etc.; prepare all appropriate forms and reports per program procedures, company policy, and federal, state, and local accident regulations.
- Ensure all daily, quarterly, and annual inspections are completed (PPE, equipment, tools, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, fall protection, assured grounding, etc.).
- Support crisis management and emergency action plans as required.
- Lead emergency preparedness drills (fire & severe weather).
- Document findings, compile information, create detailed reports, analyze data, and track progress.
- Maintain files and records for long-term storage.
- Participate in meetings to represent Safety and identify training opportunities and upcoming high-risk work.
- Participate in New Product Introductions and kickoff meetings to identify and address safety concerns prior to beginning a project.
- May perform and record HSE testing and sampling using tools like a dosimeter, light meter, or multi-gas meter.
- Must be willing to travel to and support other local Maverick Power facilities as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in safety (OHS) and a minimum of 3 years of experience working full-time in a Safety position in a Manufacturing/Assembly environment.
- Board Certified Safety Professional Certifications (ASP, CSP, OHST, etc., or equivalent).
- Electrical Safety – Control of Hazardous Energy – NFPA 70E.
- Minimum of 1 year of construction site safety experience.
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain professional and calm in stressful situations.
- Ability to immediately correct unsafe acts and unsafe conditions with all levels of employees.
- Native or Full Professional Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
- Detailed knowledge of HSE regulatory requirements – OSHA general industry and construction.
- Proficient in Office 365 programs (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to travel to work or other facilities to support safety.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in Vietnamese and/or Spanish is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Full range of dexterity in all body parts.
- Able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Able to climb ladders, stairs, and work from heights as needed.
- Able to bend, stoop, and squat.
- Able to push and pull carts, dollies, pallet jacks, etc.
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. may be required.
- Able to identify the full spectrum of colors.
- Vision correctable to 20/20 and able to perform work while wearing safety glasses (contact lenses are not allowed in manufacturing/production areas).
Work Environment
- Work may be indoors or outdoors; climates vary by location and season (hot, cold, humid, wet conditions are possible).
- May encounter loud noises, flashing lights, strong smells, insects, and dust.
- Extended periods on feet, walking on concrete floors, standing on hard surfaces or irregular terrain, climbing ladders and steps, bending, sitting, twisting, or pushing may be required.
- May work in various settings at Maverick Power facilities, including offices, multiple shops, and commercial buildings.
- Maintaining the same position or posture while performing tasks and sitting for prolonged periods.
