Safety Specialist, Administrative Services [R0152991]

Reporting to the Occupational Safety Program Manager, the Safety Specialist plays a key role in advancing a culture of health and safety at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and Nevada State University. This position functions as both a proactive educator and a technical expert in occupational safety, responsible for identifying hazards, developing preventive strategies, and working with various stakeholders ensuring compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Lead comprehensive and recurring inspections of campus buildings, shops, and various worksites to identify potential or existing safety and health hazards.
• Document inspection findings and coordinate with departments to ensure timely implementation of corrective actions.
• Assist with program development, contribute to training initiatives, and support safety-related projects.
• Serve as a subject matter expert and resource to the campus community, offering guidance, answering safety-related inquiries, and advising on best practices.
• Identify and recommend necessary safety-related purchases and coordinate with vendors to ensure proper calibration and maintenance of occupational safety and health monitoring equipment (with appropriate management approval).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• 2 to 4 years of experience conducting safety inspections with a focus on hazard recognition and prevention, performing comprehensive risk assessments, and developing practical solutions to mitigate safety and health risks.

Credentials must be obtained prior to the employment start date.

Accepted equivalencies for degree requirement: In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, applicants may qualify with four additional years of relevant experience, or with an associate's degree plus two additional years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• CHST or OHST certification.
• OSHA 10-hour General Industry or OSHA 10-hour Construction course completion card.
• Knowledge of OSHA and ANSI standards and their application to university settings.
• Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS), and Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).
• Experience using specialty equipment such as gas meters, light meters, and noise dosimeters.
• Awareness of university structure, departments, safety policies, and procedures.
• Awareness of ADA accessibility requirements.
• Familiarity with the CHIMERA inspections platform and learning management systems.

Pay

Salary range is $68,000 to $72,000.
