Occupational Summary:
The department’s objective is to increase safety in the diving industry through programs in risk mitigation, training, and education, and in providing technical support. This is a broad and varied goal and as such this advertised role is correspondingly broad.
Title and salary will be open to adjustment based on the candidate’s capabilities.
Responsibilities:
- Cook up and support DAN’s international safety initiatives and programs.
- Provide expertise in safety products, including technical specifications of current products and evaluations of potential new products.
- Monitor and analyze safety trends within the dive industry to provide input into program development.
- Offer advice and respond to inquiries and communications in risk assessment, training, diving safety, relevant technology and diver recompression treatment practices and facilities.
- Develop new and revise existing e-learning courses.
- Administer current and new eLearning systems.
- Edit, produce, and contribute to written content on dive safety topics. This may include compiling and editing newsletters, safety guides, and reports. This may include collaboration within the department, or in collaboration with other departments and outside experts.
- Generate, distribute, and analyze surveys to support program improvement.
- Update and maintain databases of service providers, instructors, dive safety officers, and recompression chambers.
- Teach students in the range of Safety Services programs.
- Facilitate external communications on safety and training through social media and other outreach initiatives.
- Organize interdepartmental collaborations for internal and external events such as DEMA.
- Present safety and training topics on public and professional platforms.
- Represent Divers Alert Network at assigned conferences, meetings, and industry events.
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned.
Education/Training:
- Appropriate bachelor’s degree (or higher) and preferably with recognized training or certification in some of the following:
- Certified scuba diver - a professional scuba diving rating is desired.
- Hyperbaric facility safety officer, operator or technician
- DAN First Aid Instructor or appropriate equivalent
- Occupational health and safety officer
- Scientific Diver certification (AAUS or equivalent)
Experience:
- Background to include at least some of the following:
- Trainer of scuba diving or related first aid provider programs
- Field experience in first aid
- Experience in the operation of medical, recompression and/or commercial diving hyperbaric facilities
- Experience in, or exposure to, diving safety functions, including related non-diving activities
- Experience in underwater activities other than recreational diving
- Experience in dive shop, boat, or pool operations
- Published or written articles for the diving and/or hyperbaric fields
- Presentations on any of the above or related topics
- Support and implementation of training programs
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in the recreational diving industry or in the diving hyperbaric medical field.
