SAFETY OFFICER -SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

About the Role

The Safety Officer is a tactical-level role focused on identifying, assessing, and controlling workplace hazards within Solid Waste Management operations. The position involves conducting work observations, facility inspections, and audits to evaluate safety-related programs and recommend improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect work sites to assess safe work practices and working conditions.
  • Evaluate, develop, and conduct field and in-house safety training programs and Safety Committee functions.
  • Investigate incidents/injuries to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Oversee the implementation and monitoring of industrial hygiene and safety-related medical surveillance programs, including Respiratory Protection Programs.
  • Prepare, analyze, and evaluate statistical data to identify trends and solutions for work-related problems.
  • Drive to various City of Houston locations as an essential function of the role.
  • Serve on-call for after-hour incident investigations.
  • Report to a specified City location during TIER I activations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • May require lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds).
  • Involves long periods of walking on rough surfaces, climbing, and body contortions.
  • Exposure to moderate heat, cold, moisture/wetness, and unpleasant air conditions.
  • Potential exposure to soiled materials and light chemical substances such as cleaning solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in Safety Administration or a closely related field (professional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis).
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Experience in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field.
  • Certifications such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Professional (GSP), Transitional Safety Professional (TSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO), or Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COSS).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
  • Preference given to eligible veteran applicants who meet the qualifications.

Schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM (subject to change).
  • On-call availability for after-hour incident investigations.

Pay

The salary range falls under pay grade 21. Factors used in determining the salary include the candidate’s qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification.

This position is subject to random drug testing and requires passing an assigned drug test if promoted. It is designated as a safety impact position.
