About the Role

The Safety Officer - Sergeant will monitor and supervise safety officers and, as needed, work in the capacity and relief of a safety officer to enforce institutional policies and procedures, protecting school property and ensuring a safe working and educational environment for staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and supervises activities of safety officers to enforce institutional policies and procedures.
  • Arranges work schedules of assigned safety officers to cover shifts.
  • Reviews essential information, conducts briefing sessions, answers questions, and participates in discussions of safety and pertinent information.
  • Works in the capacity and relief of safety officers during staff shortages if no substitute is available.
  • Analyzes reports prepared and submitted by safety officers for accuracy and completeness, ensuring substantiation of actions taken.
  • Assists in disseminating information regarding new or revised policies and procedures to safety officers and explains implications.
  • Analyzes difficult situations or problems presented by safety officers and recommends appropriate actions or procedures.
  • Compiles information for and writes reports on activities and recommendations for safety coordinators and/or director of safety.
  • Analyzes daily reports to determine performance levels or need for corrective action.
  • Attends safety staff meetings, participates in problem-solving, and recommends policy changes and program development.
  • Provides statistical information to the security operations center (SOC) analyst and safety administrators.
  • Assists staff in the investigation of incidents and safety concerns.
  • Trains newly-hired safety staff and provides ongoing on-the-job training and coaching.

Requirements

  • One to three (1–3) years of work experience in a safety officer position.
  • Successful completion of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy as administered by the Ohio Attorney General through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission Certification, or a minimum of a two-year degree in criminal justice, police science, psychology, sociology, or equivalent years of experience.
  • Possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.
  • Ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously and to work harmoniously with parents, students, staff, and the community.
  • Pass state-mandated criminal background checks and school district’s drug screening.
  • Possess an understanding and knowledge of safety and first aid as it applies to students.
  • Maintain certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Complete district’s yearly online safety trainings.

Pay

Hourly rate for the 2026/27 school year: New Hire = $19.47 per hour, plus an additional $1.25 per hour. Salary schedule includes increases after Year 1, 2, and 3.

Schedule

8 hours per day, 206 days per year (number of work days for the current school year will be pro-rated to date-of-hire).
