About the Role

Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the nation with nearly 10 million residents, is seeking a Safety Officer II to join our team. Responsibilities

  • Promotes a work culture focused on safety.
  • Monitors and logs department personnel’s compliance with safety training and certification requirements.
  • Attends and logs participation in bi-monthly safety training sessions.
  • Stays updated on federal and state safety regulations.
  • Researches and presents safety-related information for training purposes.
  • Conducts training on safety topics such as CPR, confined space, forklift, and high-lift forklift operations.
  • Inspects department facilities, identifies safety issues, and verifies repairs.
  • Travels to department worksites for inspections.
  • Investigates workplace injuries, identifies root causes, and responds to Cal/OSHA requests.
  • Performs ergonomic assessments of workspaces and equipment.
  • Ensures first aid kits are stocked and current.

Requirements

OPTION A:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional-level experience in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related program at the level of Safety Assistant.

OPTION B:

  • Five (5) years of professional-level experience in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related program responsibilities in a large department (1,000+ employees) at the level of Safety Assistant.

OPTION C:

  • One (1) year of experience as head of a comprehensive occupational safety and accident prevention program in a department.
  • A Master's degree in Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a closely related field may substitute for one year of experience.

LICENSE:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to use alternative transportation for job-related functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:

  • Physical Class III – Moderate: Standing/walking most of the time, bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting over 25 pounds, frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Qualifications

  • Professional experience must be subsequent to receiving a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • Experience at the level of Safety Assistant involves planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating, and maintaining a comprehensive occupational, environmental, and automotive safety program.
  • Closely related fields include science or engineering-based degrees with coursework in occupational safety, health, or environmental protection.

Skills

  • Knowledge of CAL/OSHA and federal safety regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivate.
  • Proficiency in computer, written, and verbal communication skills.

Examination Content

The examination consists of a structured interview assessing:

  • Prior experience as a Safety Officer.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and self-motivate.
  • Computer, written, and verbal communication skills.

Applicants achieving a passing score of 70% or higher will be placed on the eligible list.

Additional Information

  • Testing accommodations require documentation from a qualified professional.
  • Veterans may be eligible for an additional 10% credit with a DD214 Form.
  • Successful applicants must complete a thorough background investigation, including fingerprint search.
