About the role
The Safety Officer plays a crucial role in promoting workplace safety at Superior Paving Corp., supporting the company's commitment to maintaining a safe environment across all operations.
Responsibilities
- Routinely visit job sites, asphalt plants, maintenance shops, and other company facilities to monitor safety performance and compliance.
- Be on-call and respond to incidents, emergencies, and safety concerns as needed.
- Maintain current knowledge of OSHA, VOSH, FHWA, VDOT, and applicable fire marshal regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections and audits to ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and customer safety requirements.
- Auxiliary the Safety Director with developing and delivering safety training programs.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, near misses, and property damage events; identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly operations and safety meetings.
- Conduct and document safety meetings and toolbox talks with field and office personnel.
- Perform random drug and alcohol testing for non-CDL employees in accordance with company policy.
- Educate supervisors and employees on drug and alcohol testing policies and procedures.
- Maintain training records and coordinate annual certifications, including CPR, First Aid, Work Zone Traffic Control, and other operational training programs.
- Compile, analyze, and maintain safety metrics, reports, and documentation to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Conduct and document environmental compliance inspections of plant facilities to ensure adherence to applicable DEQ regulations.
- Conduct and document inspections of nuclear density gauge storage, transportation, and usage practices to ensure compliance with NRC and Virginia Department of Health regulations.
- Support company-wide safety initiatives and special projects.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and workplace safety regulations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to confidently address safety concerns and enforce policies.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications.
- Working knowledge of workers' compensation processes and injury management.
- Ability to maintain availability outside of normal business hours and respond to incidents, emergencies, and operational needs as required.
Preferred Qualification
- Three (3) or more years of occupational safety experience, preferably within construction, heavy civil, asphalt, paving, transportation, or a related industry.
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses.
- Experience delivering safety training to field personnel.
- Familiarity with VDOT requirements and work zone traffic control operations.
- CHST, ASP, CSP, or other professional safety certifications.
Physical Demands
- Ability to walk active construction sites and navigate uneven terrain.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, dust, and noise.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access elevated work areas when necessary.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to travel regularly between company locations and project sites.
