Purpose
The Safety Officer will monitor activities, promote and maintain a safe orderly school environment for students, staff, and visitors in and around school grounds.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or its equivalent (GED)
- Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (O.P.O.T.A.) certification
- If you have the Armed Certification, you must also have the academic portion of the academy
- Must successfully pass the FBI & BCI check
- Minimum of 3 years of previous work experience in a school environment or in a position involving safety and security procedures
- Excellent work record with a good attendance history
- Available to work a flexible schedule and willing to work overtime (i.e. alternate shifts, evenings, weekends/holidays, etc.)
- Must possess maturity, patience, sensitivity, and understanding of basic learning and social needs of students
- Ability to make sound judgments, resolve conflicts, work effectively, and positively interact with students, staff, and visitors
- Good physical and mental health, along with the ability to stand and patrol areas for extended periods of time
- Neat in appearance
Responsibilities
- Enforce and comply with all East Cleveland City School District policies and procedures
- Extend courtesy and offer assistance to parents, visitors, school personnel, and others
- Ensure the safety of students and serve as a role model by acting as a responsible, intelligent citizen
- Maintain the confidentiality of privileged information and respect personal privacy
- Uphold the Student Code of Conduct and maintain high expectations for student behavior and performance
- Intervene and stop physical altercations and exercise sound judgment when physical restraint is required
- Monitor and direct student movement and activity in and around the school building and grounds
- Secure assigned area at all times unless instructed otherwise
- Conduct screening and metal detection of students, parents, and visitors
- Check ID badges and hall passes, maintain clear hallways/stairways, and do not permit students to loiter
- Project a positive image through professional appearance, attitude, and conversation
- Ensure that clear routes are maintained to emergency exits and assist with building evacuations during emergencies
- Monitor building surveillance systems to ensure that the student's behavior promotes a proper school climate and learning environment
- Monitor and report that building equipment is operating properly and report problems (e.g. unusual odors, noises, leaks, power failures, etc.) to the Building Administrator/Director of Security
- Prepare written reports and/or referrals as needed and perform all assigned duties in a complete, accurate, and timely manner
- Assist in protecting District property, and supervision of high priority, common areas such as cafeterias, halls, restrooms, and study halls
- Contribute to the accomplishment of School District/Department goals
- Perform other duties/tasks as assigned by the Director of Security or School District Administrator
- To serve at the will of the District whereby either party has the right to terminate employment
- Possess the physical and mental attributes required to perform all essential functions
Pay & Schedule
- Salary: 195 Days a School Year
- Per OAPSE Negotiated Agreement
- 2026-2027 School Year
- Required Probationary Period: 105 Days
- Employee will serve at the will of the District
