Safety Manager I
About the role
BAE Systems is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead a team of direct and indirect reports—including Safety Specialists, Safety Techs, Competent Persons, and Administrative staff—supporting safe shipyard repair and production activities in compliance with corporate safety policy and all federal, state, and local regulations.
You will develop partnerships across the organization to foster a proactive safety culture, create and maintain robust hazard identification and risk assessment processes, and establish the infrastructure needed to deliver industry-leading Safety and Health performance.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, consensus standards, and customer requirements.
- Conduct and oversee incident investigations, train safety staff, and engage management in the process to recommend process improvements and hazard mitigation.
- Arrange and oversee robust safety inspections across the facility, including training and personal oversight of inspection methods.
- Ensure adequate risk assessment, hazard analysis, and determination of controls for work processes; train employees in these methods.
- Provide guidance to project management teams on health and safety, confirming compliance with industry, local, state, and federal guidelines.
- Schedule, conduct, and oversee occupational safety and health training to ensure all employees are appropriately trained for their roles.
- Provide subject matter expertise to advance the organization’s safety culture.
- Review and update Safety and Occupational Health policies and procedures to reflect the latest regulatory, industry, and company standards (e.g., Gas Free, Industrial Hygiene, OSHA, SHE Assurance).
- Foster an environment of active engagement, partnering, coaching, and enforcement of company and regulatory requirements.
- Lead proactive projects to reduce risk based on injury data analysis, employee interviews, risk assessments, past incidents, and near misses.
- Report metrics and performance status to business and market leaders.
- Maintain external certification programs, specifically OSHA VPP Star and ISO:45001.
- Participate in industry organizations.
- Monitor and report KPIs and metrics proactively.
- Engage with workforce compliance partners (Facilities, Production, etc.) to address compliance gaps.
- Monitor and comply with budget requirements.
Requirements
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health, Environmental, or Engineering discipline, and eight (8) years of related experience, or equivalent.
- Proficient in OSHA regulations and consensus standards.
- Capable of recognizing risks and hazards associated with shipyard activities; requires conceptual and innovative thinking for identifying solutions.
- Exceptional communication skills for exchanging complex information.
- Training experience.
- Basic knowledge of industrial hygiene (IH) principles.
- Experienced people manager, overseeing both direct and indirect reports; ability to lead, mentor, train, and develop personnel across shifts.
- Computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Familiarity with project and department budget tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in manufacturing or a shipyard environment.
- Familiarity with NAVSEA standards.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or in the process of obtaining certification.
- Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA 30-hour Maritime Safety, and familiarity with 29 CFR Part 1915.
- Familiarity with Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) programs.
- Knowledgeable in Safety & Health management systems such as ISO 45001.
- Experience with root cause analysis software.
Pay
Full-Time Salary Range: $118,747 – $201,870. Individual salaries are determined by factors including business considerations, local market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications such as skills, education, and experience.
