About the role
Vigor Marine Group is seeking a Safety Program Manager to oversee safety programs, policies, and procedures across assigned business units. This role requires a strong safety background and the ability to enforce safety policies.
Responsibilities
- Identifies and anticipates safety & health concerns and hazards
- Guides and promotes safe work performance
- Enforces safety policies
- Leads and participates in safety activities
- Supports company-wide objectives
- Updates procedures and process memorandums
- Safeguard employee health
- Take immediate corrective actions
- Represent the Safety Department
- Provide critical safety related trainings
- Attend and participate in safety meetings
- Provide safety concerns to operational leaders
- Complete and maintain safety related reports
- Engage in professional development
- Assist with special projects
Essential Functions
- Develops safety systems, policies, and procedures
- Develops safety campaigns, communications, and recognitions
- Conducts inspections and reports statistics
- Counsel managers and employees
- Facilitate awareness and understanding of safety hazards
- Coordinate with local, state, and regional safety groups
- Identify and address unsafe behaviors
- Investigate accidents, injuries, fires, and other incidents
- Communicate safety concerns to operational personnel and project supervisors
- Provide safety training
- Advocate for corrective measures

- Provides depth to safety functions
- Supports company-wide initiatives

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of OSHA Maritime and General Industry regulations
- Ability to perform as a Shipyard Competent Person
- Ability to recognize safety deficiencies and take corrective actions
- Ability to identify trends in unsafe practices and recommend corrective measures
- Ability to investigate accidents and produce reports
- Ability to understand job scope and identify safety concerns
- Ability to use PC and software applications
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines
- Ability to schedule, direct, and organize work
- Ability to facilitate group decision-making, team building, and conflict resolution
- Ability to recognize potential and active high-risk situations
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate
- Associate’s degree in a closely related field or equivalent combination of formal education and experience required
- Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, industrial hygiene, safety management, or related field of study preferred
- Three (3) or more years of demonstrated proficiency in a safety inspector/representative role in a heavy manufacturing or marine industry required
- Completion of a National Fire Protection Association Shipyard Competent Person course (or equivalent fire suppression course work)
Preferred Qualifications
- Associates or Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
- OSHA 10, OSHA 30, HAZWOPER Certification
- Shipyard Competent person
- OSHA 54, 52, 3115, 3095 Certificates
- Vessel or Shipyard experience under Title 29 CFR part 1915 Occupational Safety and Health Standards for Shipyard Employment
Physical Demands
- Dynamic, fast-paced office setting
- Moderate to loud noise levels from production activity
- Exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dusts, and odors
- May be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekends
- May be required to lift up to 20 pounds
