Role Overview
The Safety Specialist supports all safety, health, and environmental (HSE) activities across the full lifecycle of a power generation site, including construction, generator installation, commissioning, plant operations, and service/maintenance operations. This role helps identify hazards, monitor field conditions, conduct training, and ensure compliance with project HSE plans and regulatory requirements. The Safety Specialist works closely with project and plant management teams, technicians, and contractors to maintain a safe work environment and promote a strong safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical resource during construction, installation, commissioning, and ongoing operations.
- Conduct regular inspections of work areas, equipment, personnel, and ongoing tasks to ensure compliance with HSE requirements.
- Support industrial hygiene sampling, including gas detection, noise monitoring, and heat-stress monitoring.
- Affiliate with environmental compliance, monitoring and reporting tasks such as waste management, chemical management, recycling programs, SPCC, spill prevention, and stormwater controls.
- Support, conduct and analyze EHS inspections, auditing and contractor compliance.
- Identify and communicate hazards related to energized work, heavy equipment, rigging, lifting, excavation, confined spaces, line-of-fire exposures, and mechanical work.
- Stop work when unsafe conditions exist and coordinate corrective actions.
- Participate in pre-task planning, JSA/HHA reviews, permit reviews, tailboard meetings, and contractor coordination sessions.
- Interpret and explain safety requirements to project personnel.
- Affiliate with developing and delivering HSE orientations for all personnel entering the designated site.
- Support training programs on electrical safety, working at heights, LOTO, event/ emergency response, and other topics.
- Prepare clear written communications, reports, and client-required documentation.
- Collect data, maintain records, and support preparation of reports, KPIs, and trend analyses.
- Maintain location HSE database entries (observations, incidents, audits, inspections, corrective actions, training records).
- Support investigations of near misses, injuries, unsafe conditions, environmental releases, and property damage; support root-cause analysis and corrective/preventative actions.
- Affiliate and support EHS team initiatives and program rollout.
- Review trends and leading indicators to recommend proactive improvements.
- Contribute to weekly safety meetings and help develop safety-meeting content.
Basic (Required) Qualifications
- Experience & Certifications: 5–7 years in one or combination of power generation, utilities, data center, oil and gas, EPC megaprojects or commissioning, start up and operations. Safety certification (CHST, OHST, or equivalent), Registered Environmental Manager or Professional, ISO 14001 certification, Associate Environmental professional preferred; Recent OSHA 30 required.
- Education: Degree in Occupational Safety or related field may substitute for experience.
- Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of low- and medium-voltage electrical safety and NFPA 70E. Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Skills: Build strong working relationships with internal teams, technicians, and contractors. Strong communication skills; effective with diverse teams. Bilingual English/Spanish highly preferred. Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain a passport.
- Physical & Work Environment Requirements: Ability to work in industrial and outdoor environments, including exposure to heat, humidity, and cold. Regular presence in operating areas with exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment. Ability to stand, walk, and navigate the site for extended periods. Ability to climb ladders and safely lift up to 50 pounds. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with safety standards.
