Safety Director

About the role

The Safety Director is responsible for collaborating with other region safety professionals and company leadership to establish and develop a culture of safety across Michigan Paving & Materials, Stoneco, and Cadillac Asphalt. This role provides technical and compliance expertise to promote good safety habits and a safe work environment, working closely with safety managers and supervisory personnel to achieve goals and support the safety of each business unit. The Safety Director oversees, manages, and coordinates the administration of the Risk Management and Environmental teams.

Responsibilities

• Manages one direct report with dotted-line reporting from OpCo Safety Leads.
• Motivates behavior change and creates a proactive safety culture within the assigned region and across all companies.
• Partners with business unit leadership to drive proper safe behavior and a strong safety culture.
• Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations by studying existing and new legislation, interpreting standards, enforcing adherence, and advising management on required actions.
• Coordinates and performs ongoing safety training to ensure an educated, safe, and compliant workforce.
• Enforces safety policies through inspections, reporting statistics, and counseling managers and employees.
• Ensures timely reporting of all safety incidents in accordance with CRH Materials Group standards.
• Conducts accident investigations, maintains records, and follows up to eliminate causes.
• Performs inspections and industrial hygiene audits for assigned locations.
• Acts as a consultant and resource for executives, managers, supervisors, and hourly employees on safety incidents and preventable solutions.
• Ensures required trainings are conducted for managers and employees; may facilitate training as needed.
• Assists with insurance company loss control and safety consulting services to improve the company’s safety process.
• Works with government and regulatory agencies (OSHA, MSHA, DOT, etc.) during site inspections on safety-related matters.
• Creates clear and concise reports using Microsoft applications and other company programs.
• Manages the Drug-Free Workplace Program requirements collection process.
• Maintains professional and technical knowledge through educational workshops, professional publications, networking, and participation in professional societies.
• Monitors and administers claims, generates reports, and communicates with employees, managers, insurance carriers, medical personnel, and lawyers.
• Provides information to employees about workers’ compensation benefits.
• Assists third-party administrators in determining compensability for workers’ compensation benefits.
• Consults with business unit contacts to complete first reports of injury.
• Facilitates cost-effective Return-to-Work (RTW) strategies for the company and employees.
• Works with Safety to support prevention programs and analyzes injury reports to address patterns.
• Completes monthly claims review and reserve status reports (with finance).
• Assists third-party administrators in reviewing workers’ compensation benefits for medical bills, legal expenses, and indemnity/death benefits.
• Consults with corporate risk management, third-party administrators, and legal counsel as needed.
• Assists legal staff in handling litigated claims.
• Tracks and maintains OSHA logs and all safety reports, including recordables, preventables, and accident reports.
• Tracks, maintains, and handles all liability claims, involving legal counsel when needed.
• Follows all applicable laws and administers programs in accordance with company policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Five or more years of workers’ compensation claim management experience; general, product, and auto liability claims management; OSHA experience preferred.
• Workers’ compensation experience in the state of Michigan highly desired.
• Prior experience handling lost-time claims.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
• Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to relate to all levels of employees.
• Strong administrative and analytical skills.
• Self-starter requiring minimal supervision.
• Demonstrates a hands-on, collaborative approach and works well in a team.
• Willingness to travel occasionally.
• Displays a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
• Willingness to travel and work away from home when required.
• Willingness to work nights and weekends when necessary.
• Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.
• Strict adherence to company policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Book of Policies.
• Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
• Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance.

Special Requirements

• Travel required in assigned region—this position is NOT at a fixed location.
• Acts as an on-call contact for emergency incident management in a 24/7 workplace.
• Valid Driver’s License.
