Hourly salary: Up to $34.93. FLSA: Non-Exempt. Incumbents are included in the Civil Service system in a "for-cause" employment status and are unrepresented. This recruitment is being conducted as an open part-time recruitment; all successful candidates will be placed on an open list for future vacancies. The current vacancy exists in the City of Stockton Police Department.

About the role

The Evidence Disposition Investigator will review, document, and work with detectives, the District Attorney, and courts to obtain authorization to dispose of evidence associated with criminal cases. The incumbent will work a flexible shift. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting.

Under general supervision, provides assistance with technical, administrative, and field activities; performs research and assists with conducting various studies and analyses in the Police and Fire Departments. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures responsiveness to customers in area of responsibility; resolves difficult and sensitive customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Provides technical assistance and advice to other sections and City staff; stays abreast of new and proposed laws, regulations, codes, methods, materials, techniques, and applications.
  • Enters and retrieves data and provides general office support for field and office personnel.
  • Consults with field staff for the processing of reports, studies, and/or presentations.
  • Provides departmental information to the public and staff from other City departments and/or outside agencies.
  • Reviews departmental reports for accuracy and makes recommendations for efficient data gathering and departmental statistics.
  • Assists with public information requests and document production requests associated with department litigation.
  • Researches and assembles information from various sources for the completion of forms or preparation of special reports.
  • Utilizes computer applications to assist with analytical studies and department projects.
  • Assists staff with budget preparation and compilation.
  • Maintains current and accurate inventory of department equipment, computers, and vehicles.
  • Conducts special projects and organizes and maintains department records and files.
  • Body Worn Camera: Reviews, redacts, and copies video associated with the Body Worn Camera program.
  • Camera Operator: Monitors real-time camera operations using the City’s CCTV System and provides support to sworn and civilian staff.
  • Evidence Disposition: Reviews, documents, and works with detectives, the District Attorney, and courts to obtain authorization to dispose of evidence.
  • Health & Fitness: Ensures department compliance with Wellness/Fitness initiatives and mandated health testing for Stockton Fire Department personnel.
  • Investigation (e.g., Background, Cold Case, Collision, Evidence, Identity Theft, Internal Affairs, Fraud): Performs investigations, case preparation, and testimony.
  • Live Scan: Performs basic tasks associated with fingerprinting individuals for registration, permitting, and pre-employment screening.
  • Public Records: Reviews reports, calls for service, and other data to determine releasable information.
  • Traffic Unit: Assists the public with traffic-related issues (e.g., citation inquiries, vehicle tows).
  • Vacant Property Inspector: Performs skilled office work and field inspections for code enforcement and abatement regulations.
  • Volunteer Services: Oversees the volunteer program and schedules and monitors staff at special events.
  • Range Attendant: Assists with administering firearms qualifications, servicing and maintaining firearms, and maintaining the range. May assist in firearm instruction.
  • Wellness Coordinator: Oversees the Organizational Wellness Unit under the guidance of the Office of the Chief of Police.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Depending on assignment, may require a valid Basic Peace Officer or Reserve (Peace) Officer Certificate (Level I) issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
  • Three (3) years of sworn safety experience required for Safety Department Aide I.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a law enforcement or public safety setting in the field to which assigned.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Specified positions may require specialized training and/or certification as prescribed by local, state, and/or federal law or regulation.
  • Specified positions in the Police Department must maintain a valid Reserve (Peace) Officer certification or higher and maintain ability to carry a concealed weapon under California Penal Code 832.
  • As a condition of continued employment, employees assigned to specific areas may be required to obtain and maintain specific valid certifications or training.
  • Specified positions must successfully complete a background investigation, including fingerprint clearance.
  • Bilingual skills are desirable but not required.

Physical & Mental Abilities

  • Mobility: Constant sitting for long periods while operating a keyboard; occasional walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of 10 pounds or less.
  • Vision: Constant use of overall visual capabilities; frequent need for color perception, hand/eye coordination, reading, and/or close-up work.
  • Dexterity: Frequent holding, grasping, typing, repetitive motion, and writing.
  • Hearing/Talking: Constant hearing and talking of normal speech in person and on the telephone; occasional speaking in front of large groups.
  • Special Requirements: May require occasional weekend or evening work.
  • Emotional/Psychological: Constant concentration, decision-making, and public contact; occasional ability to exercise sound judgment under stressful situations and working alone.
  • Environmental Conditions: Occasional exposure to noise; primarily performed in an office environment which may be moderately quiet or loud at times.
