About the role
As the Safety and Compliance Specialist, you’ll play a critical role in supporting independent contractors to ensure compliance with safety regulations, promote safe driving practices, and help build a culture of safety within the organization.
Responsibilities
- Promote and enforce Lightning’s Safety Policies by onboarding Independent Contractors through a comprehensive orientation process, ensuring completion of all required documentation, training, inspections, and certifications, while maintaining open communication and providing ongoing safety training to support a strong safety culture.
- Ensure contractor compliance with all regulatory, safety, and recordkeeping requirements by maintaining qualification files, managing permits, conducting audits, and taking corrective actions as needed.
- Oversee Lightning’s equipment program by managing inspections, maintenance, and compliance of tractors, chassis, GPS units, tablets, and related devices, ensuring accurate records, timely service, and adherence to company and regulatory standards.
- Support KPI achievement by monitoring safety performance, identifying issues, and driving improvements through policy development, data analysis, and contractor training.
- Analyze data from GEOTAB, cameras, and ELDs to identify risks and compliance issues, support training, and assist the Contractor Services Manager with incident investigations and prevention efforts.
- Implement EOS within your position to enhance your skills and productivity while continually promoting the company’s core values.
- Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two years of verifiable shop experience in a heavy truck garage or one year of experience performing FHWA inspections under a qualified inspector.
- Knowledge of safety regulations for federal, state, and local guidelines (FMCSA, DOT, OSHA).
- Ability to use Microsoft programs, such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to effectively communicate, resolve conflict, and demonstrate strong organizational skills.
Physical demands
- Pushing/Pulling/Lifting less than 50lbs.
- Exposed to working outdoors in normal, hot, cold, dusty or wet environments.
- Office setting with temperature-controlled offices with moderate noise levels.
- Physical ability to position self under tractors to perform inspections.
