About the role

Rutgers Accelerate & Renew Academy (RARA) is a university-based tutoring initiative that partners with local community centers, youth programs, and schools to support K–12 students, primarily those in grades K–8, in Camden, NJ. AmeriCorps members help students build literacy, math, and social-emotional development skills through high-impact tutoring and mentoring while fostering confidence and growth. Members serve in after-school settings, delivering one-on-one and small-group instruction tailored to students’ needs.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-impact academic support in literacy and math through one-on-one and small-group sessions in after-school settings.
• Promote social-emotional development by building positive relationships and serving as consistent, caring role models.
• Track student progress, help reinforce key skills, and collaborate with site staff to meet student needs.
• Receive training in trauma-informed care, culturally responsive practices, and youth development.
• Grow as leaders, educators, and changemakers through service.

Requirements

• No teaching experience required; passion for equity, education, and service is needed.
• Minimum age: 17; maximum age: 85.
• High school diploma or GED.
