About the role
Rural Carrier Associates are non-career employees who deliver and collect mail along a prescribed rural route using a vehicle. They provide customers with a variety of services, including selling stamps, supplies, and money orders.
Responsibilities
- Sort mail in delivery sequence for the assigned route.
- Receive and sign for accountable mail.
- Load mail in vehicle.
- Deliver mail to customers along a prescribed route on a regular schedule by vehicle; collect monies and receipts for accountable mail; pick up mail from customers' roadside boxes.
- Sell stamps, stamped paper, and money orders; accept C.O.D., registered, certified, and insured mail and parcel post; furnish routine information concerning postal matters and provide requested forms to customers.
- Return mail collected, undeliverable mail, and submit monies and receipts to post office.
- Prepare mail for forwarding and maintain records of change of address information.
- Prepare a daily trip report and maintain a list of the customers on the route.
- Conduct special surveys when required.
- Maintain an inventory of stamps and stamped paper as needed to provide service to customers on the route.
- Provide for mail security at all times.
Requirements
- Desirable candidates may be required to have a vehicle suitable for use.
- Must live within easy commuting distance of the facility location.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including loading and unloading trays and containers of mail and parcels weighing as much as 70 pounds.
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
Schedule
Work is available usually on Saturdays, then on an as-needed basis to cover the absence of the carrier.
