Route Driver Crew Leader

Location: Street Cleaning, Refuse Disposal – Full-Time, Regular position.

About the Role

Under general supervision, the Route Driver Crew Leader operates trucks and specialized equipment for the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, yard debris, and materials used in composting operations, as well as the maintenance of composting facilities. This position covers downed routes across all collection areas and is not assigned to a specific route.

The incumbent plans detailed methods to achieve objectives within established policies and procedures, requiring initiative and resourcefulness in developing processes.

Responsibilities

• Complete assigned route duties within scheduled work time.
• Operate various heavy specialized equipment as needed.
• Inspect assigned vehicles and equipment to ensure proper performance and safe operation; perform routine maintenance.
• Train new Route Drivers on all equipment operations.
• Maintain regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule.
• Operate refuse and recycling trucks along designated routes; transport loads to refuse, recycling, and composting stations.
• Respond to routine customer inquiries.
• Train other Route Drivers.
• Support all EWS Special Event-related activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The Route Driver Crew Leader determines how to meet delivery schedules with available personnel, assesses vehicle and equipment safety, operates equipment within guidelines, and selects appropriate methods to accomplish assigned work.

Requirements

• Knowledge of the proper operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in refuse, recycling, yard trimmings, and bulky waste collection.
• Understanding of safety requirements, standards, and procedures for operating vehicles and equipment.
• Familiarity with applicable ordinances, regulations, and policies regarding the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and yard debris.
• Knowledge of City of Plano streets and address locations.
• Skill in clear verbal and written communication.
• Ability to operate vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety policies and regulations.
• Proficiency in basic mathematical calculations.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Four (4) years of experience operating heavy equipment and refuse collection trucks. Relevant work experience may substitute for education requirements.
• Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (may require Tanker endorsement).

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• Mobility to work in and around City composting, recycling, and refuse facilities, and to operate motor vehicles on unimproved/improved surfaces.
• Strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, operate hand and power tools, and work around machinery.
• Vision to read printed materials and hearing/speech to communicate in person, over the telephone, or via radio.
• Frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.
• Finger dexterity to operate tools and equipment.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when loading materials and performing maintenance.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds (or heavier with proper equipment).
• Exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, road hazards, dust, toxic waste, chemicals, mechanical/electrical hazards, and hazardous substances.

Pay

Hourly salary range: $20.74 – $29.04.
