Salary: $20.20 - $32.70/hour, minimum 4 hours per day.
About the role
The Bus Driver is responsible for transporting students over scheduled routes and to/from special excursions in a timely manner, ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition, and maintaining the safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading from buses.
Responsibilities
- Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior to reinforce regulations and maintain passenger safety.
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergency situations to resolve or recommend resolutions.
- Assists students and other passengers with safe loading and unloading from buses, including emergency situations.
- Attends meetings and training to maintain skills and meet certificate requirements for school bus drivers.
- Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
- Conducts emergency evacuation drills to ensure efficiency of procedures and compliance with mandated requirements.
- Discharges students only at authorized stops to align with District policies and regulations.
- Drives school buses or vans to transport passengers over scheduled routes to and from school and/or field trips safely and timely.
- Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g., oil, water, fuel) to maintain safe operating conditions.
- Informs school personnel, parents, and others of events and practices (e.g., scheduled stops, established routes, route conditions).
- Maintains confidentiality of all information concerning students, staff, or parents/guardians.
- Remains available for a varied schedule on "snow days" to aid in early school closings if necessary.
- Obeys all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses to complete routes/activity trips safely and timely.
- Operates a two-way radio to stay in communication with the Dispatcher and the Department.
- Prepares documents and reports (e.g., field trip reports, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, student counts, routing information, payroll information).
- Reports observations and incidents (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior) to appropriate personnel.
- Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and other school personnel to provide information and/or direction.
- Supervises students and other passengers during transit using positive verbal and non-verbal communication and interaction strategies.
- Utilizes proper OSHA procedures when handling body fluids to preserve driver and passenger health.
- Assists other personnel as required to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
Requirements
- Skills required to perform multiple, technical tasks with potential need for skill upgrades to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills include:
- Adhering to safety practices.
- Operating all school buses in the fleet, including automatic snow chains, controls, door controls, gauges, fuel pumps, and two-way radios.
- Preparing and maintaining accurate records.
- Knowledge required to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly. Specific knowledge includes:
- Wyoming rules and laws of the road.
- Handling student discipline by approved Department procedures.
- Troubleshooting mechanical problems with buses.
- Concepts of grammar and punctuation.
- Safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to schedule activities, collate data, and use job-related equipment. Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and data, and operate a variety of equipment. Problem-solving skills to analyze issues and create action plans.
- Specific abilities include:
- Communicating with diverse groups.
- Displaying mechanical aptitude.
- Maintaining confidentiality.
- Meeting deadlines and schedules.
- Responsibilities include working under limited supervision, leading or coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget.
Work Environment
The job requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. Generally, the job requires 75% sitting, 15% walking, and 10% standing.
Qualifications
- Job-related experience is required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Required testing and certifications:
- Federal DOT Physical.
- Pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening.
- CDL Type B Driver's License with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Evidence of insurability.
- CPR/First Aid Certificate (by assignment).
- Continuing education/training:
- Six hours of annual training required by Wyoming Department of Education.
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training & Testing.
- Diabetes Training & Testing.
- Homeless Training & Testing.
- Maintain evidence of insurability.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
