Roundhouse Mechanic I - CAS (less than 500 hrs)/PT (less than 1000 hrs)

About the role

This position assists with inspections, maintenance, and repairs to steam and diesel locomotives, gas and diesel generators, passenger coaches, and other related equipment as required. It involves working in a team environment, utilizing hand and power tools, and performing preventive maintenance inspections.

Responsibilities

• Works in a team environment assisting other mechanics performing repairs to historic railroad equipment.
• Utilizes hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently.
• Aids in performing preventive maintenance inspections on locomotives and passenger coaches and related equipment.
• Installs special equipment necessary for the improvement and safety of the train.
• Maintains a clean work environment and ensures equipment is in clean, safe, and presentable condition.
• Performs related duties as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Two years of experience in the repair and service of locomotives, automobiles, trucks, or heavy equipment.
• Ability to work flexible schedules as needed for weekends, evenings, holidays, special events, and programs.
• Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in servicing and repairing steam, gasoline, and diesel equipment.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations applicable to locomotive and equipment standards.
• Knowledge of the safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment.
• Welding, plumbing, and electrical experience preferred.

Qualifications

Must pass a criminal background check and have or obtain a Texas Class C driver's license within 30 days of hire. Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, FRA 5 panel drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1). Must pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision (Ishihara and Titmus) and audio screening. Subject to periodic random drug and alcohol testing. Subject to Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision and audio screenings every three years as required by law.

• Able to diagnose complex repair needs of railroad equipment.
• Able to determine functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system.
• Able to interpret technical reference manuals.
