This position supports Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs by working with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a certificated teacher, providing instructional and clerical support.

Responsibilities

  • Administers tests, homework assignments, and make-up work to support teachers in the instructional process.
  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g., reading stories, listening to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforcing English lessons, facilitating activities, and supporting computer learning programs) to reinforce learning concepts and help students reach academic goals.
  • Attends meetings, in-service presentations, and trainings to acquire or convey job-related information.
  • Confers with teachers and/or parents to provide input into student progress evaluations and implement or modify student objectives.
  • Guides students in independent study (e.g., enrichment or remedial work) to ensure student success.
  • Implements instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of an assigned teacher to improve students' academic success.
  • Maintains classroom resources, work areas, and student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, managing audio-visual equipment, and updating bulletin boards) to ensure availability and reliability of information.
  • Monitors students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, bus loading/unloading) to provide assistance and ensure a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Performs record-keeping and clerical functions (e.g., copying, correcting papers, completing attendance verifications, and recording phone calls) to support teachers and maintain necessary records.
  • Reports observations and incidents (e.g., accidents, fights, inappropriate behavior, rule violations, safety conditions) to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured students, fights) to address immediate safety concerns and direct resolution.
  • Supports classroom teachers and school personnel in implementing curriculum and teaching methodologies.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope of the position.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one of the following:
    • Qualifying score on the Education Testing Service (ETS) paraeducator assessment as published by PESB.
    • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Seventy-two quarter credits or forty-eight semester credits at the 100 level or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Completion of a paraeducator apprenticeship program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • One year of related paid work experience.
  • Valid State of Washington Driver’s License or equivalent mobility.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance.

Skills

  • Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and ratios.
  • Read manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others.
  • Understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development, learning styles, and age-appropriate activities.
  • Perform multiple, non-technical tasks and upgrade skills as needed for changing job conditions.
  • Operate standard office equipment and use pertinent software applications.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Schedule activities and meetings, gather and collate data, and use basic job-related equipment.
  • Flexibility to work with diverse individuals and data, utilizing standardized methods.
  • Problem-solving skills to identify issues and select action plans when working with others, data, or equipment.
  • Communicate with diverse groups, maintain confidentiality, set priorities, work as part of a team, and handle constant interruptions.
  • Keyboarding and computer proficiency.

Working Conditions

  • Performs job functions under direct supervision using standardized procedures.
  • Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
  • Job requires 35% sitting, 35% walking, and 30% standing.
  • Performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.

Benefits

Seattle Public Schools benefits are administered by the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA) under the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB). Eligibility for benefits is determined by the number of hours worked during the school year (September 1 through August 31). Employees scheduled to work 630 hours or more in a year are eligible for benefits.
