Room Service Attendant
About the role
As a Room Service Attendant at Banner Health, you will be part of a cohesive team providing premier patient food services. You will deliver meal trays to patients, assist with opening food and beverages, and ensure excellent customer service. This role includes cross-training in the dish room to support business needs during peak times, call-offs, or vacations. You may also assist with patient menus, meal requests, and collaborate with Nutrition Techs and Dietetic Technicians.
This is a full-time position with varied shifts during the week, including 6:30 AM–3:00 PM and 11:30 AM–8:00 PM, and includes weekend work (every 3rd weekend off). You will receive an additional $1/hour weekend differential for all hours worked on weekends. Free uniforms, including one pair of shoes yearly, are provided.
This role is based at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Gilbert, Arizona, a state-of-the-art facility with Magnet™ recognition for nursing excellence. The hospital features 286 private rooms, 13 operating suites, a 46-bed emergency department, and shares a campus with the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, which offers advanced oncology care.
Responsibilities
- Visit patients to obtain or discuss menu selections based on dietary orders.
- Enter or record daily patient meal selections and preferences for one or more patient units.
- Demonstrate appropriate judgment with modified diets, food, and menu knowledge when interacting with patients; request Diet Tech or Dietitian assistance as needed.
- Edit patient menus as required.
- Provide patient meal service, including setting up tray work stations, preparing/portioning assigned foods, and assembling patient trays.
- Deliver and serve meals while addressing special requests, snacks, and nourishments.
- Provide excellent customer service in person and over the phone, resolving complaints efficiently.
- Maintain food handling and sanitation standards to meet licensing requirements.
- Resolve minor issues with patient menus and trays.
- Collaborate with patients, families, food service staff, nursing staff, dietetic technicians, and dietitians.
Requirements
- Reading, writing, and mathematical skills.
- One to two years of experience in nutrition services or a related field.
- For Banner Staffing Services (BSS) team members, a food handlers' card is required within 30 days of hire (not required for BSS team members in Tucson and Colorado).
- Effective interpersonal communication skills and a friendly customer service attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines for working with cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to learn and work with business computer software and point-of-sale systems.
- Ability to learn food handling regulations and pass certification tests as required.
- Demonstrated customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
- Understanding of nutrition services, common modified diets, and portion measures.
- Experience in healthcare nutrition services.
- Bilingual skills (preferred in some assignments).
