About the Role

Chautauqua Institution owns and operates the Chautauqua Hotel Company, a historic full-service hotel with 150 guest rooms. The Athenaeum Hotel houses the Heirloom Restaurant and the Lobby Lounge. The hotel operates from late April through October for conferences and events, with full operation during the summer season from late June through late August.

Responsibilities

  • Clean hotel rooms as assigned while ensuring standards of cleanliness and safety under the direction of the Hotel General Manager, Director of Lodging & Sales, Executive Housekeeper, and/or Housekeeping Supervisor(s).
  • Complete daily room assignments and checklists efficiently, prioritizing tasks within allotted time per room without compromising quality.
  • Stock wheeled cart with cleaning supplies using the designated sign-out procedure and fill/labels chemical cleaning products as necessary.
  • Transport cleaning supplies and linens/towels to assigned areas.
  • Execute specific procedures for cleaning hotel rooms during overnight stays and check-outs.
  • Pick up trash/debris, vacuum, empty wastebaskets, and transport waste to disposal areas.
  • Scrub and disinfect bathrooms using designated chemical products, including floors, sinks, toilets, baths/hot tubs, and showers.
  • Polish wooden fixtures such as desks, dressers, and nightstands.
  • Remove and replace bed linens upon guest check-out or request, using only laundered linens.
  • Replenish supplies and toiletries, communicating product needs to managers or supervisors.
  • Report room maintenance issues, property damages, or safety concerns to supervisors for resolution.
  • Follow outlined procedures to report and log lost guest items for prompt return.
  • Adhere to safety procedures for chemical cleaners to prevent damage and maintain safety standards.
  • Comply with OSHA’s Blood Borne Pathogen and Hazard Communication/Safety Data Standards, including proper use of protective equipment when handling potentially infectious materials or cleaning chemicals.
  • Interact positively with guests, anticipate needs, and respond promptly to questions or concerns.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative, productive working relationships with team members.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Executive Housekeeper, Housekeeping Supervisors, Front Desk Manager, and/or Front Desk regarding room status.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and training/development programs, including sharing expertise with new hires.
  • Report work-related injuries immediately to a manager/supervisor and Human Resources using the appropriate Injury Report, even if not seeking medical attention.

Pay

Compensation for this position starts at $16.00/hour and may reach up to $18.00/hour with demonstrated experience and qualifications, plus tips.

Schedule

This is a seasonal position during summer operations, starting annually in June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may extend earlier (pre-season) or later (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability. Schedules typically include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

  • Typically work an eight-hour shift; options range from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m., totaling 30-40 hours per week.
  • Part-time work is available pre- and post-season.
  • Must be available to work any day of the week, including holidays and weekends.
  • Scheduled hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays based on business needs.

Benefits

  • Employees receive a traditional Chautauqua gate pass, free of cost, providing access to many programs at the Amphitheater.
  • Referral Bonus Program: Active employees who refer a new candidate hired and employed for at least 90 days (or 30 days for seasonal positions working less than 6 months) receive a $500 referral bonus (less taxes).

Housing

No employer-provided housing is available for this position, including onsite or off-grounds options. Applicants should secure independent housing or reside within a commutable distance.
