Role Player

Ho-Chunk Inc. Management Services (HCIMS) is seeking a part-time, on-call Role Player based at Fort Pickett in Blackstone, VA. This position supports training events by portraying various roles and reacting dynamically to student actions within scripted and improvised scenarios.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to training standards, including staying within assigned training lane, remaining “in role” during missions, and following security rules.
  • Participate in practical exercises and Field Training Exercises in rural and urban environments to reinforce student knowledge and operational judgment.
  • Perform in urban/mounted operations training, including scenarios involving blank-firing weapons, simulated firefights, and role-specific outcomes (e.g., “dying in place” or capture).
  • Engage students at appropriate intensity levels and adjust responses based on student performance.
  • Understand the intent, mechanics, and flow of each exercise, including the use of blank ammunition, simunitions, paintball, and pyrotechnics.
  • Integrate into training scenarios portraying various roles, such as hostile forces, friendly forces, civilians, police, terrorists, or other assigned characters.
  • Undergo regular searches as part of training exercises, including vigorous pat-downs and weapon/explosive device checks.
  • Portray assigned roles with creativity, staying in character and applying independent judgment within scripted scenarios or ad-libbing as directed.
  • Dress in costume appropriate to the role and maintain familiarity with foreign cultures, particularly those of the Middle East, Africa, and other regions.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance, communicating professionally with co-workers, supervisors, and government personnel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including potential travel to other U.S. and foreign training sites (up to 25% of work time).

Requirements

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Active and valid U.S. Driver’s License.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain/maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather.
  • Physical ability to stand for long periods, climb stairs, walk on uneven ground, lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and work irregular hours.
  • Comfort working in environments with pyrotechnics, blank ammunition, and simulated combat scenarios.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to evaluate and respond realistically to actions of other role players and trainees.
  • Ability to improvise convincing reactions to unscripted movements and adjust intensity based on training objectives.
  • Cultural knowledge of regions being duplicated in training scenarios (e.g., Middle East, Africa).

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Role Player preferred.
  • Experience in improvisational or semi-scripted acting is preferred.
  • Skills oriented toward supporting unit training execution, after-action reviews, and maximizing training effectiveness.

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position is $25.00 to $35.00 per hour, negotiable depending on education and experience.

Schedule

This is a part-time, on-call position. Typical days and hours of work will vary depending on training needs, including potential evening and weekend hours.
