About the role
This full-time role assists survey operations in the field under the direction of a Survey Crew Chief or a Survey Instrument Operator. EMH&T has the largest single-location survey team in Central Ohio, equipped with Trimble Windows Mobile data collectors, robotic instruments, 3D scanning, and geodetic GPS receivers (including real-time network, Kinematic, and static surveying). All field personnel are subject to a safety-sensitive testing program, including random screenings after training.
Responsibilities
- Assist with site construction staking or capturing field survey coordinates and elevations.
- Perform upkeep of equipment and maintain supplies for the survey crew.
- Manage and transport equipment and supplies (e.g., stakes, pins, paint, poles) to and from work vehicles.
- Carry and deliver supplies to the site.
- Run level rod or prism pole to obtain elevations and survey observations.
- Assist with physical efforts required to complete a land survey, such as clearing lines of sight or measuring underground structures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- No prior experience needed.
- Possible overtime and occasional out-of-town or overnight work.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in all weather conditions, with exposure to poisonous plants, insects, and allergens.
- Ability to walk and stand for most of the workday.
- Ability to maneuver over rough, uneven terrain while carrying 40–50 lbs. of supplies or equipment.
- Stamina to work 8–10 hours per day for the entire work year.
- Capable of using a 4-lb. to 12-lb. sledgehammer for pounding stakes or pins (2–8 hours per day, varying by task).
- Intermittent bending and squatting required for hammering, equipment setup, or clearing vegetation.
- Ability to lift and set aside 60–100-lb. manholes using manhole hooks.
- Capable of using a machete, brush hook, or similar tool to cut light brush.
- Must wear proper PPE, including hard hat (if required), gloves, boots, safety vests, and high-visibility clothing; no short pants allowed.
