Robotics Systems Engineer I, Robotics Delivery and Packaging Innovation (RDPI) - Tech Deployment

About the role

Robotics Delivery & Packaging Innovations (RDPI) Technology Deployment team within Amazon Robotics (AR) is seeking a Systems Engineer to deploy leading edge industrial robotics and customer fulfillment technologies across North America Stores operations. This field engineering position demands strong technical skills for deploying robotic equipment, including mechanical and electrical systems, network configurations, and software coordination. Project durations vary from a few days to several months, with travel across North America upwards of 75% or more. Relocation to Amazon Corporate offices in Seattle, Boston, Nashville or Austin is required.

Key job responsibilities

• Support and guide installation of robotics, packaging and sortation technologies at Amazon fulfillment centers
• Develop detailed knowledge of the operation of robotic systems and guide installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of these systems both on site and remotely
• Manage technical ambiguity around integration of work cells in fulfillment centers
• Collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams
• Travel to project sites and collaborate both virtually and in person to ensure all business stakeholders are aligned on program status
• Manage day to day project scheduling and budget management
• Work on continuous improvement activities to improve the projects in your space
• Generate and implement continuous improvement ideas around work-scopes
• Lead teams of other engineers on projects
• Travel to both live warehouses and new construction sites; scopes may vary significantly in length and include heavy travel
• Manage the tactical deployment of large scale industrial automation technologies, ranging in technical complexity and product maturity from early alpha/beta to mature Generally Available
• Own the tactical execution (onsite coordination of installation and acceptance testing) to achieve the target "go-live" date for each project assigned; delivering independently
• Collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams to convert technical requirements into refined deployment execution documents (schedules, Standard Operating Procedures, dependencies, etc.)
• Improve operational metrics and team processes through automation and optimization
• Independently resolve difficult technical problems during deployment, considering operational burden and making appropriate trade-offs between time, quality, and resources
• Create and improve standard work documents and operational guidebooks, and work towards automating or improving team processes
• Influence internal and partner teams towards meeting team level goals
• Develop subject matter expertise in one or more deployment domains
• Mentor junior engineers and participate in technical assessment
• Drive operational excellence initiatives with measurable results

Physical demands

• Lift and move totes up to 49 pounds each
• Regular bending, lifting, stretching and reaching both below the waist and above the head
• Walking in the FC and around area with great frequency; facilities are over a quarter mile in length
• Must be able to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours
• Should be able to work in environments with variable noise levels, lighting conditions and temperature variation
• Able to access all areas of building (ascending and descending ladders, stairs, gangways safely and without limitation)

A day in the life

In this role you will be focused on execution of end-to-end deployment and manage technical ambiguity around integration of workcells in fulfillment centers. On a daily basis you will collaborate with hardware engineering, technical program managers, product managers, and internal customers including site maintenance and operations teams, to ensure the product you are deploying is both ready for deployment and capable of achieving the business requirements. You will travel to your project sites, collaborate both virtually and in person, to ensure all business stakeholders are aligned on program status. You will manage the day-to-day project execution, and work on continuous improvement activities to improve the projects in your space. You will spend time with mentors and your manager to develop your professional skills and collaborate amongst your team to move the needle on the services you are accountable for.

Robotics Delivery & Packaging Innovation (RDPI) within Amazon Robotics is a smart, collaborative team of enthusiastic doers that work passionately to apply advances in robotics and software to solve real-world challenges that will transform our customers' experiences. RDPI Tech Deployment enables the delivery of large scale automation technologies designed and manufactured by Amazon. The team is multi-disciplinary, consisting of Field Deployment Engineers, Controls Engineering, Design for Deployment, Product Single Threaded Leaders, and a Program Management Office team, who collaborate on enabling the delivery of new technologies and packaging solutions that delight our customers, and improve the safety, quality and costs within the Amazon fulfillment processes. The team is geographically located across four North America hub locations. The work delivered directly impacts high priority goals set each year to our most senior leadership at Amazon.

Basic qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent
• 1+ year's experience with technical drawings and/or reading CAD models (mechanical and electrical)
• 1+ year's Experience working on mechanical, electrical, IT networked, or software systems
• Understanding of data collection, reporting processes, and ability to make data-driven decisions
• Ability to read technical drawings and/or reading CAD models to resolve on-site clash issues using 3D clash detection reports
• Ability to troubleshoot robotics systems to resolve escalations including quality hand-off, live order testing, site acceptance testing, operational readiness testing, monitoring robotics system performance, etc.
• Ability to read and develop technical documentation and process instructions
• Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Willingness to work primarily in a construction or warehouse environment in a field-based role and travel extensively across the US and potentially internationally
• Must be proficient in standard office software tools and processes

Preferred qualifications

• 1-3 years of experience working in a field engineering, construction, manufacturing, or warehouse environment
• Proven experience working on hardware integration or complex mechanical-electrical or networked industrial equipment
• Knowledge of specific robotic equipment (Fanuc, ABB), and Allen Bradley PLC experience
• Ability to demonstrate past use of data to drive decision making processes
• Practical understanding of network fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, routing, switching, HTTP)
• Ability to take independent initiative when presented with a business need
• Certified in OSHA, ANSI, or other Automation Safety Certifications
• Familiarity with LEAN or Six Sigma, certifications are a plus
