Roadway/Bridge Construction - Transportation Generalist
About the role
The Transportation Generalist is responsible for obtaining representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performing appropriate tests to ensure quality assurance. Duties include conducting construction materials acceptance tests, reading and interpreting plans and specifications, checking the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features, measuring, computing, and documenting pay items, implementing inspection processes, monitoring contractor personnel, assisting the Plant Monitor, and performing snow and ice duties.
Responsibilities
- Performs construction materials acceptance tests (such as gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder and slump)
- Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance
- Checks the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features to ensure conformance to plans and specifications
- Measures, computes and documents pay items to ensure proper payment for work done under the contract
- Monitors the work of contractor personnel to ensure compliance with established processes, practices, and specifications
- Aids the Plant Monitor to ensure materials meet specifications and requirements
- Performs snow and ice duties such as maintaining roadways and preparing and inspecting winter equipment
Requirements
- Valid Class D driver’s license or equivalent license from another state
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no Air Brake Restriction and Tanker Endorsement within six (6) months of initial placement into the position
- Ability to obtain and maintain the following certifications as available: Grading & Base Inspector Certification (BGIC), Erosion/Sediment Control Inspector/Installer Exam Part 1
Qualifications
- One year of experience in any of the following areas: contract administration (road and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering
- A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent

Pay
$24.76 - $31.06 / hourly; $51,698 - $64,853 / annually
Schedule
Day Shift/M-F 7 AM - 3:30 PM; contractor hours or Snow & Ice
