Positions in this classification will be subject to pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing pursuant to the provisions of the County of Merced Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.

  • Operation and maintenance of a variety of road maintenance equipment.
  • Provisions of the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment on streets and roads.
  • Safe work practices.
  • Provisions of the California Vehicle Code relating to the operation of medium and heavy equipment on streets and roads.
  • Methods, procedures, tools, and materials used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads.

Ability

  • Operate and maintain a variety of road maintenance equipment.
  • Read and set construction staking.
  • Maintain and make minor repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Keep simple records.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Read blueprints to locate cables and underground telephone lines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER I: Experience: None. Education: 12th grade or GED equivalent. License: Incumbents must obtain a valid Class "B" California driver's license within 120 days of appointment or be removed from this classification. Incumbent will also be required to possess and maintain a valid Class "A" California driver's license if training to operate a semi-truck and trailer rig or operating such equipment on a temporary basis. Positions in this classification required to apply herbicides must possess valid Applicator Certification.
  • ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER II: Experience: One (1) year of road maintenance work and construction experience comparable to that of a Road Maintenance Worker I in Merced County. License: Possess and maintain a valid Class "B" California driver's license. Incumbent will be required to possess a valid Class "A" California driver's license if training to operate a semi-truck and trailer rig or operating such equipment on a temporary basis. Positions in this classification required to apply herbicides must possess Applicator Certification.
  • ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER III: Experience: Three (3) years of road maintenance experience, including one (1) year performing duties comparable to those of Road Maintenance Worker II in Merced County which included training and experience in heavy equipment operations. License: Possess and maintain a valid California Class "A" driver's license. Positions in this classification applying herbicides must possess a valid Applicator Certification.
