About the Role
Under close supervision, performs skilled work of routine difficulty in the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and highways; operates light to heavy construction/maintenance type equipment; performs related work as assigned. This position is eligible to receive the snowplow stipend in accordance with Navajo County Personnel policy 2.9.
Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of construction/maintenance type equipment (light to heavy class) for road care and construction, including dozers, graders, back hoes, tankers, sweepers, snow plows, etc.
- Uses tools and equipment for maintaining and constructing roads and highways.
- Performs routine and manual labor work requiring heavy lifting for road construction, repair, and maintenance.
- Makes minor repairs (including welding) and performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Flags traffic and diverts it away from construction areas, ensuring driver and worker safety; places signs and barricades to protect construction sites.
- Replaces and repairs culverts, cattle guards, fences, guard rails, and other roadway appurtenances; maintains rights of way by removing brush, obstacles, and debris; falls trees with chain saws.
- Applies asphalt, patches potholes, seal coats/chip seals roads, applies paving fabrics, and repairs crack seal.
- Assists with wildland fires by creating fire barriers, removing brush, and contouring land topography.
- Explains project work and its impacts to residents and travelers.
- May lead other workers and assist in training equipment operation and duty performance.
- May perform some electrical work.
- Prepares reports and maintains records.
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of highway construction and maintenance methods and equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation and care of light to heavy highway maintenance vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of the care and operation of hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating highway maintenance vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Skill in maintaining construction equipment.
- Skill in effectively communicating verbally and in writing.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
